Wyoming Region G update

I've attended both open houses in Kemmerrer and Pinedale and here's the conclusion.
Deer numbers down but stable-winter habitat big problem-shortened deer seasons and no antlerless harvest in 143 and 135, 134. Rifle seasons 15-30 Sept. In 134 and 135 1 - 10 Oct. Only 800 Non-res tags issued.
Antelope doing well - increased tags in 93 for bucks to 700.
Elk doing excellent - increased in all units and hunt seasons extended to Nov 5 in many units and they are crying for people to kill cows. proposing extra cow only tags. In SW areas they actually counted the herd quota by aircraft this year.
SO INSTEAD OF THE USUAL DOOM AND GLOOM THINGS LOOK PRETTY GOOD!!

One more thing I picked up a summary pamphlet at the Pinedale open house compiled by one of the new Biologists which has very interesting reading on the Wyoming Range Mule Deer Herd: 1958-2006.
I pretty sure he'd gladly mail you one.
Nick Scriber - Habitat Biologist - P.O. Box 850 Pinedale, WY 82941
It has Deer Counts, kills, Annual Precip, sagebrush growth, rainfall, habitat loss due to drilling, ect, ect. GOOD INFO!!

Wow 20% less tags for nonresidents in G. Thanks for the update, have you heard any thing on H yet? I heard they were going to cut tags in H also and that is where I put in for,oh well life is a peepy.

Cutting Nonresident tags while all of the Wyoming residents may roam free on region G is bunch of BS, and extremely poor management. The Wyoming Game and Fish has their head way up their $ss on this one. The would love for some one to clean house and fire everyone in Wyo GnF departments and get some fresh minds in there!

Interesting, cutting the number of NR tags will probably help a little but not too much. The shorter season will affect things though, I'm considering going over there in 08, I don't like the idea of the season being shortened to only two weeks.

Not applying for G again this year. Not so much because of the reduced # of NR tags but because we're going to spend more time scouting the area in Utah I'm finally going to draw. We'll get the WY bonus/preference points, though. Until a couple years ago G has always been good to us. Don't get me wrong - ANY time spent hunting in the Greys is memorable. But the wolves we ran into and the deer we did NOT run into are a new kind of memory - one that will definitely be a consideration when applying in the future.

Most of the folks I know from Afton and around G are either too busy to hunt or don't care if they put a doe or a 2pt in their freezer, so long as they have venison. When we're up there 90% of the rigs are not WY. We really can't complain when most of the time we NR hunters are able to get in and hunt before the weekend warriors and locals arrive when the opener falls on a weekday in WY or ID.

Life is good...good luck to all on your draws this year!

Your right, alot of the guys here are not trophy hunters and I do not mean that negative one way or the other. But that is pretty much the same in every state I have hunted. Here in this part of WY most folks put more time into elk hunting for lots of various reasons and especially the folks that are not as hardcore of hunter. Deer take a back seat. One reason is the simple fact they run out of time to do it all since we have antelope, good fall fishing etc. Frandly some don't want to contend with all the competion from all those out of state plates looking for such a limited number of good bucks. They would rather go after elk which there are more of in more areas and the competion not as great. In the end the locals lack of interest sure helps create more opportunties for the nonresidents. I just wish there were more good deer for all of us to share in WY, UT, MT, CO, ID, NV, NM, & AZ.

It's been my experience that nonresidents totally outnumber residents in G and H, particularly G. We have counted plates and it is usually around five nonres to every res plate. WY Game and Fish can control hunter numbers fairly well by the number of nonres tags issued. My 2 cents.

I agree with the cutting of tags but it should be both non res and res. Way to much popularity on region G. I think it has way over reduced the amount of good bucks in the area. The two week season is a good thing to. I think there doing a pretty good job on trying to help the deer heards, Wish Utah would pull there heads out and do something. As far as the Elk go if they lowered there tag prices for cows more people would do it.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-07 AT 07:36AM (MST)[p]What you guys dont understand about Wyoming Residents is that, there are just not that many of them to worry about, you have to remember that there are less people in the whole state than there are in Salt Lake City. Take that into account that there are not many guys who give a rats arse about trophy mule deer, most are elk hunting and opportunists when it comes to big bucks, and the fact that region G is just one little tiny area in a state that holds big deer everywhere and you have residents who dont really make a dent when it comes to management. And take into account that Wyoming has an inherent hatred for Utah MuleyMaster and that your rant isnt going to get you very far. So sit back relax, and find a new unit. G isnt what it used to be. And yes I am a displaced native.

It doesn't matter how many residents hunt G?

Come on! The F&G issue something like 2,000 tags for the area to NR. They can hope that only 6,000 residents hunt G. That is 8,000 hunters. With a success rate of 30% you kill 2,000 bucks.

What has happened to G&H????????????????

Get real, the obvious answer is that it is overhunted. What happened to the Bookcliffs or the Pauns or Henry's Mtn when the F&G shut down hunting for a few years? The population of bucks EXPLODED. You want to make G&H come back. Make them trophy hunts with limited entry for res and non res. Period!

I realise this was from 14 years ago, they have replaced most of those managers and actually they do a pretty good job and we are proud for the most part of their hard work. We don’t want limited quota on all of the Wyoming Range as residents but the herd is far worse off now than it was in 2007. Back then you complain of having 800 tags, now it is only 400. I would like to see a small compromise of limited quota in areas 144, and 143, all the rest remain General license, increased cow elk harvest and move all the season to Oct. 1-10 in G. The problem is many residents just want to keep General license hunting across the board when we’ve had numerous winter die-offs since 2007 and extended drought periods and even more loss on Winter range due to extensive Gas drilling on their core Winter range areas.

No, more like 65% and certainly growing as those were 2012 surveys when the Wyoming Range was at 40,000 deer. It is now at 29,000 and falling.

“Limiting hunters in the field—Despite the finding above that a majority think it is
important to hunt every year, a large majority of mule deer hunters (65%) support limiting the number of hunters in the field, even if it would make it less likely that they would draw a license; meanwhile, 26% oppose.”

Another interesting response.

“Nearly half of Wyoming mule deer hunters (47%) say that the quality of their deer hunting over the past 5 years has gotten worse. Otherwise, 44% give a neutral answer (the same, 34%; don’t know, 10%), and only 9% say it has improved.”

I doubt the Wyoming Range was at 40,000 deer in 2012.

What year was it that the GF moved to a better population modeling program?

IIRC, it was about 2016-17

It was pretty close to that and certainly much better than it is now as it’s at about 29,000.

In 2010 it was approaching 40,000 and there were a few mild winters in there before the really bad one in 2016-2017.

14 yr old post brought back from the dead somebody has,way to much time on their hands
I'll refrain from further comment. I got the last one in Wyoming deleted for that I apologize but I don't apologize for the comnent I made that got it deleted

Pretty funny that 90% of the guys that complain about the region dont even hunt it or have hunted it once or twice.
Not speaking for all here but I’ve only hunted and watched the Wyoming Range herd for 45+ years. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen it. They did an exhaustive air survey last year and observed 25,000 deer. Of course they adjusted it upwards just to get the 29,000 they placed on the reports. Their next move will be to lower the objective to 30,000. Sad.
