I returned from my Buff hunt on the Henry Mountains and must say, it was a hunt unlike anything I have ever experienced. I was going to try and post on the mountain (like CAelknuts).
However, due to cell phone problems and service I was unable to do so.

It might be a little long winded, but with all that happend, I may need a little time in order to cover the entire hunt.

The hunt was planned, after I found out that I had been drawn for a "Hunt Expo" tag. It was a cow hunt and I was issued a tag/hunt that would open on the 4th of October.

I started doing some research on the area and was able to get some great information from MM members. Rutnbuck, was the one who really saved me on this hunt. After a several PM's, visiting with him at his house covering maps and areas, and a scouting trip to look at the areas he showed us, we were ready for the hunt to start.

Oct 3rd (a day before opening day):

After a hectic night of putting all of our gear together, and going over our "hunting lists", we left Cache Valley early Friday morning.

As we made the 8 hour drive to our campsite, I recieved good word that my friend would be joining us. This was a relief, due to the fact that having 3 people would make setting up camp, packing, etc... much easier.

After arriving at camp, we were able to take an hour or 2 to set up the wall tent and somewhat organize our gear. We had about 45 minutes before dark, so me and my friend Terry went for a quick scouting trip. We saw some promising areas, including some great Henry Mountain bucks.

Oct 4th:

Opening morning was finally here! It was cold, windy, and looked like it was going to rain. We drove to what looked like a good glassing area. We spent the next hour or so glassing a large canyon. After a while, we decided to try another area. We didn't really expect much opening day. We figured we would get to know some areas and would be more prepared for the following day.

While driving to to another area to hunt, my friend said: "There are some over there". At first, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. After talking to others before, I had expected it might take days before we would find any.

I looked over on a far ridge and saw about 8 dark bison moving slowly accross the top of the mountain. It was an amazing site to see. This was the first time I had ever seen Bison in the wild. My dad commented that it was an experince he would never forget. As we were deciding how to put a stalk on the herd, we heard the distinctive sound of "boom". At the sound of the shot the herd was on the move and it was obvious that another hunter had beat us to them........
