My question is would it be a waste of money to hire an elk guide in my home state (Utah)? I'm only considering this because it would most likely be my only elk hunt, and I'm not so confident that I can do it myself. Any thoughts?

depends a lot on the unit but, 3point being a guide myself, id strongly recommend it this is your one chance make the most of it. Specially if your puttin in for a unit that you dont know too well. do your homework find a good reputable guide check references and get to know them. If your on the wasatch look us up at strawberrybay.com, awholelottabull is top rate on any unit. Do what ya need to and good luck!

3Point,

You may be suprised how many residents actually hire a guide when they finally draw. Many of them for the same reason you are considering. You may very well be able to be successful on your own, but being confident that you can do it plays a big role in that success. Like you have already been told, if you choose to go guided, contact several and be sure to do your homework. A few hours on the phone talking with references is a small price to pay to be sure you get a good guide.

If you choose the guided route, let me know. Maybe I can be of some help. I guide in a few areas, but have contacts in most all the other units.

Good luck,

Jon
