LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-08 AT 08:48PM (MST)[p]I'm trying to help out an old friend of mine. He is an older man with a unit 100 tag. Hunt starts the 15th of October and he has made some calls to the WY fish and game and hasn't gotten to far on understanding what the unit has to offer. I have heard there are some good bulls but wanted to post a quick message if there is anyone out there who can offer advice. Thanks guys! My buddy is fit enough to hike but old enough to really appreciate a direction to hike in.

thats a great tag he's got, I hope he's running 10 ply tire's on his truck, that area is hard on tires and he'll need to cover some country to fined them. When he does they'll be good ones. I think that area is coverd by the Rock Springs office of G&F, he'll have a hard time getting ahold of the Bioligist this time of year but thats were I would have started a couple of months ago.

I second Gotlost.
I hunted moose up there several years ago and the biologist was great to help. The problem was finding him by a phone. I would keep trying to contact him. Good luck!

try getting up on the south end of oregon buttes and spot in the evening, go a little north and east of the JB power plant, and unless they moved Green River is where the G and F office is located

Thanks everyone for the help. He has been trying to contact them and he gets put on hold for an hour. There are some good bulls there? What should I tell him he may be able to come across?

Get in touch with nontypical250, he shot a great 340 bull on that unit 2 years ago with his bow.. He may be willing to share some information with ya.. Good Luck, and if you have never been to the unit don't turn around when you see what it offers from the road.. It is some of the neatest hunting around; cold sand, tall sage, and some good water holes... nontypical250 made me a believer!!

Do you know how I would get a hold of nontypical250? My buddy is taking off tonight for Wyoming.

I don't want to sound dumb but I am new at this...How do I personal message you?

Is there a button I click on?

Great elk unit to draw, also a tough one to draw. We hunt antelope in this unit. Kind of strange to see a herd of Elk with some nice bulls in it running through rolling sagebrush hills with not a tree in sight. Cover alot of ground from your vehicle.....great access....some timbered pockets. Congrats and good luck.

That is actually one of the most sought after elk tags around here! There are some really nice bulls out there, just takes alot of glassing the tall sage brush and desert flats. You guys shouldn't have any problems squaring up with a good bull if you plan on spending a few days hunting hard. Good Luck!

We hunted out there two out of three years a couple of years ago for elk. Best thing you can do is show up 4 - 5 days early and spend yer time scouting. Plenty of elk around Steamboat and plenty of hunters. Same with Oregon Butte. Both area's are a pretty good distance from each other and you'll find elk scattered everywhere in between. Those elk move around a lot when they start to get pressured. Scouting is yer best friend...

RE: Wyoming unit 100

Thanks guys for all the help! My buddy left tonight and I have passed along all the info.

on't know if you will be in contact with your freind in the next few days, but. I just got in this mornng from the unit. I scouted for five days before the hunt and this year is tuff and different then all my research. I did ill a 315 class bull on opener and only one of four 300 class bulls I seen in six days and over three hundred miles on ATV's on many two track roads in the area.

If you talk to him tell him to go east of steamboat Mtn. and freighter gap area. All the elk we saw had moved east on te alkili basin area and east of there. Talked to the F&G after I tagged out and they told me they had seen alot of herds and several better bulls out there. I did see them out i n that area when I was caring for my bull. GO EAST AND SEE BULLS THIS YEAR. Lots of early hunts and weather appears to have moved them from the usual area.

Great to hear from you about the unit. My friend will be glad to get all the advice possible as this is a unit he has never hunted. I will be talking to him tonight and will pass on all the good info. If you hear anything else please keep it coming I know he will really appreciate it. I will make sure and post any success here if it happens!
