I'll be hunting the early season rifle in Colorado for mule deer. I was wondering how I should care for a velvet horned animal, if I get one, if he's still in velvet? Kerry

Be very very careful if you want to save it... Keep it cool..keep it from rubbing against something...get it to a taxidermist to preserve it. You can get the stuff to preserve it yourself...and take it with you if your worried about it too much..:)

I had synthetic velvet put on my buck from last year. The color did not come back quite what it was on the buck but I also do not have to worry about the velvet cracking or peeling in the future.

If, I mean when I get my next buck this year I am not sure what I will do. This years buck had very round tips as it was pretty early. The buck that my wife got a little over a week later had very well formed tips and was actually just starting to peel his velvet so we had the taxidermist strip the velvet and mounted hers hard horned.
