LAST EDITED ON Jun-15-05 AT 10:29PM (MST)[p]I drew this area (5th choice- archery) and never been there before. I was looking for some info on this area.

Man, a lot of people drew tags in this area. I heard they doubled the quota for NR's and also increased the total tag count for all the hunts. It may be even more crowded than usual. I know everyone tends to focus on the East Humbolte and Ruby ranges but what about the other ranges in the unit? Also,
I've got a late tag and I'm wondering if the deer will actually be migrating by the end of October or if they will stay high until the snow pushes them down?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-17-05 AT 08:01AM (MST)[p]The majority of the deer live in the East Humbolts and the Ruby's. The area is completly landlocked with very few public access points. There are only 6 or 7 public access points and these are far from where the deer live making it difficult for the general public to reach the deer. A lot of people apply for this area not knowing the difficulty in accessing the the country where the deer are. It takes a lot of snow to get the deer to leave the high country. IF I didin't guide in this area and have acces to the high country I would never apply for this area. There are too many other units that are more easily accessed by the general hunter.

Is there anyone out there that has actually hunted the 101-108 Late rifle hunt the last couple years that I could talk with. Just PM me and let me know.

Hey Wes can you help me out I drew 101 early also any info would be great.. Thanks

hey, i live in ely, just drew for the early ruby hunt, will be going for in with stock, any good advice?

Well, these numbers are from the 2004 quotas. both res and NR are added together:

2163 Tags-rifle early
541 Tags-rifle late
197 Tags-muzzleloader early
38 Tags-muzzleloader late
615 Tags archery early
91 Tags-archery late
792 Junior (youth tags)

4437 total tags and thats not counting the landowner tags or the social welfare tags outfitters get.

The area looks big on the map, but as mentioned, a lot of it is locked up. Clover Valley (East Humboldts) is pretty locked up but is accessible through the one place I know of and I even hear they have valet parking up there...LOL. Just kidding, but that gets pounded. A couple of outifitters run clients up there and may get a bit assed up with you "do it yourselfers" being in thier area of operations. Consult your maps.

I think you have to call ahead for most camping spots during the rifle season. And wear tons of orange. There is a pretty good competition to kill whatever qualifies as a legal deer up there and though most shooters can recognize humans no matter what they wear, you only have to hear the music of a dozen or so rifles on opening day to really appreciate urban camo (i.e. try to look like a road cone). I was in area 7 once during opening day and thought...so this is what a firefight sounds like?

Angel lake (East Humboldts)and its lower campgrounds has some camping as well. Take your fishing pole. Its got some 12" rainbows in it. Not accessible with the ATV's around there, so if that part of the mountain is where you want to be, folks will have to suffer through with walking.

South Rubies is ATV hell from what I understand. They paved Harrison Pass partway so folks can haul their trailers and what not without fear of flats at least. Whew. Take fishing pole again. Ruby Marshes just south of there has some good bass fishing and trout as well. I've been through there during rifle season and it is like a an RV/ATV jamboree in there.

Starr Valley is all but shut down as well. Lamoille Canyon is good camping, but once again its public (no ATV's though). Lee, Jiggs area may have some accesses, but you are getting perilously close to Harrison Pass and South Ruby there. The Lee indian colony has a good portion of the north part of the rubies locked up.

The south parts of 104 and 108 I have not hunted in so I can't comment.

M-loaders seem to have the best chance of getting the quality as there will be fewer people in there.

There will be deer there, but as to the quality I can't say. If they live through archery season and muzzleloader season, they may just be willing to commit suicide...LOL.

Area 10 (101-108) gets the most quotas of the whole state and its one of the hardest to get access too. Good revenue generator for the NDOW I guess. There is some public access but it will be crowded. Pretty country though. You might see some Mtn. goats and Rocky mtn. sheep.

Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-05 AT 09:32PM (MST)[p]don't forget the junior hunters old enough to hold an rifle shooting (and wounding deer that they lose)at every deer they see from the back grandpa truck and oh ya bird hunters too however not last or lease the 89 yrs old formaly retired NV state hi-way worker supervisor boss of the whole state and parts of Utah pot hole recovery unit taring quartermaster bergade and plow master who would not stop talking to him self the whole night and early morning who shot my truck and backed into my quad trailer and then swore it backed into him even though it was unhitched and pack up and ended up next to me at the new camp next to 26000 other idiots just like him! never ever put in for the largest quota area! sorry never did get them I will call you where are you at. How late can I call you.. Thanks

It seems like the feelings for this unit are mixed. I pose the following question. Does a Do-It-Yourself hunter stand a chance to see or get a trophy Mule Deer on this unit during the late any weapon hunt?

TT

You betcha. A buddy of mine drew an early tag last year and shot a respectable buck (160 class). He was very happy with it. 180 class deer can be had in just about any NV unit, but they aren't just hanging around every juniper waiting to be shot. He drove in as far as he could, then hiked in as far as his legs would carry him on a day trip. Shot his buck on the fifth day in a sagebrush patch in the bottom of a canyon that several hunters walked by on the ridge tops. He had seen this buck on the first day, but didn't want to settle for him so soon in the hunt. By the fifth day he was ready to take him and glassed the canyon from first light until 11:00 when the buck got up to move. Had to bone him out and hike down the canyon 'cause he couldn't carry it back up. Got back to his truck at 10:00 PM.

The problem with Area 10 is the limited access points to get into the high country and the effort required to get there. If you can pack in or backpack hunt, you'll do just fine. Or you can hire Wes to take you in and give you the hunt of a lifetime.

Like any unit in NV, do your homework and cross your fingers. Trophy animals are there to be had, but they are considered trophies because they are so rare.

I checked your profile to see if I knew you and saw you're from Riverside. I'm origonally from Riverside ( Rubidoux actually ) and thats a good place to be from. Far from!. I raised a lot a h... in Riverside in my younger days.

Ther's always a chance for a good buck but it's a litle more difficult in these units. The majority of the deer live in the high country which is very difficult to access. It also takes a lot of snow to move them down. There have been years when I hunted the high country the last week of the late season because of the lack of snow. Last year was a good year for the late hunt because we got a ton of snow early. During the third week of the early season when I finally decided to get my hunters off the mountain my horse was pushing snow up to his neck. We got into a lot of good bucks down low after that. IF theres a good snow look from Harrison Pass down to Bald Mountain. Those areas have excellent public access. The Maveriks and the Medicines are a good place to look too but it's gonna take a LOT of snow to get em there. Good luck.

I had that tag 3 seasons ago for muzzle loader, it was by far the worst deer tag I have ever had. Private land, low deer numbers made this terrible. I saw 3 bucks in 8 days of hunting. my suggestio would be to turn it in and get bonus points if you could.

tony

I agree with you Fishon! I had to do it over I would have hocked some thing and got an guide or turn it in for the point!
By far the worst non res tag I ever had!
A lesson learned.

C'mon now Tony, first Colorado and now this. They're two of the best units in the west! You're just used to the great general deer hunt in Utah-hahaha just kiddin. Hope you're doing good!

I'd take any Nevada tag over a general Utah tag-with the exception of the extended archery hunt.

The DVD is out and a done deal!

I've never hunted 10, but it looks like some incredible country and I hope to have a crack at it within a year or two.

I drew area 10 early also never been there but had a few co workers that been there before nothing smaller then four pointers and 25 inch bigger the bad thing is that I cant get a hold of him moved out of state. So Wes I will be calling you soon and hope you could help me.

If unit 10 is all that bad the harvest stats are sure screwed up? It's success rates and 4 point or bigger bucks exceeds most general season hunts in other states. Escpecially the late season rifle hunt.

HUH?
LE hunts vs GEN's??
how can you compare?
apples and oranges
HOW MANY 4PTS TAKEN IN UTAH SOUTHERN GEN SEASON?
HOW MANY IN UNIT 10?
TALKING TOTALS HERE.........HUH?

Rackmaster

Yep, me too.

I'd much rather be hunting the NE region during the rifle hunt. Best hunt in the west!

Sure wish Utah's wonderful DWR would list some accurate info on success rates and the number of 4 points taken like NV does.

But, they don't. But, according to our fearless leaders and conservation groups, "The good old days of Utah's deer hunting are back."

Go get 'em boys! I feel really bad for those of you that have to suffer through a NV hunt, beter luck next year:)

Don't know who you are talking abot when you say the good old days are now. I can assure you I don't believe that comment. All the western states have problems when it comes to deer. I guess 101-108 in nevada is better then what my uncle and cousins got in Nevada. "nothing for the 3rd straight year". I would take a northeast Utah tag every year before I would take no tag for 3 years as a nevada resident.

Just my thoughts.

tony

Sorry Tony, I may be a bit overbore with the "good old days" comment.

I've spent enough time hunting out of Utah to know that for the most part the grass is MUCH greener on the other side of the hill. It just upsets me to see how much potential Utah has, and how the DWR continues to manage the way they are. It's time to wake up and take a serious look at micromanagement-even if that means only 1 hunt every three years.

I'd rather wait three years and have a great hunt than the usual Utah experience.

I know every state has its problems, but Utah could be a whole lot better. I've said it numerous times and I'll say it again. Let's get some of Colorado's management plans over here!

Good luck in the rest of the draws. I have no need to worry, I'm going to draw an Idaho and Wyoming deer tag this week, and an AZ tag next month-bring 'em on!!!

Got to thinkin it's taking some guys 1 to 3 years to draw a Utah general tag. Think I'd rather wait a couple of years for a NV tag than a Utah tag, but hey that's just me.

Good luck where ever you hunt!

Now $400 for a general Central tag at a banquet-that's some funny stuff!

The good thing about Utah in my opinion is you can hunt deer every year if you choose. Wether it is archery or the north you get a chance.

Also Colorado isn't all bells and whistles, it has its share of problems also. The debate in wildlife is (quality or Quantity) It is a debate that cannot be settled. The goal should be compromise on both sides but I don't know how realistic that is.

Well I am hoping for Wyoming and AZ as well for myself, but atleast my 10 year old drew a 5b hunt in New Mexico so I am stoked about that.

A 10 YRS OLD CAN GET AN NON RES TAG IN NM?
I was now only thinking about hunter safety for my 11yrs old son
who now says ok he'll go!(not going to push him and he shoots his 20 ga good!).next weekend!
I just want him to enjoy it! (and all those jr hunt and points he can start getting!)he will be 12 in jan 06 so every thing gonna fall into place!
good luck!
rack

Yes, in New Mexico all they have to have is hunters safety and no age limit. We are also waiting on AZ for him. He might be spoiled in his 1st year.
