Went Cow hunting this week and didn't see a single elk. We hiked everywhere we could think of and saw no fresh tracks, no elk. What happened. But we saw Wolves and mountain lions. And saw only three doe's. Anyone else hunting this unit. We talked to five different camps and everyone has the same story. No Elk. No one has seen them or seen a fresh track. We heard no shots either. But everyone has seen wolves. If anyone has any idea where the elk are, please help a fellow MMer. We tent camp, hike, and work hard but everyone seems to be having a heck of a time finding the elk, or they are all gone. One of the two. Anyone else having the same problem?

Same story in 36 around the west yankee fork.We hiked 10 miles a day(I went on google and measured) only saw 8 tracks that weren't more than a few days old.no one saw any elk we talked to.But everyone knew where the wolves were. right in the middle of camp!!!I saw the tracks in the snow.

Got back last night. Had a herd of elk in a pocket and decided to wait until they came to feed out, since we were in 30-A and muzzleloader hunting and needed to get close. Bad mistake. About 1:00 pm 7 wolves showed up and you can guess the rest. They did the usual wolf kill. Caught a cow by the nose while the others hamstrung her then ate on the hind end, while the one still held the cow by the nose. After it died it was torn to shreds.
The other elk in the herd headed over the top and into the valley. My guess is alot of the elk have headed for the bottoms to try and get away from the wolves. Try glassing the sage brush bottoms and fields. The only deer we have seen have been in the bottoms.
