Utah Late Hunt Predictions

Without a doubt it's been a strange year for Utah's LE elk hunters. A potential new world record was taken, but the number of 370-410 bulls appears to be way off.

Reports from the summer ranges seemed to be pretty positive with a lot of good bulls being found. Where'd these bulls go? Or were they really ever there to begin with?

So, with that in mind we're just a few weeks out from the late elk hunts. Could it be the best hunt of the year, or is it gonna keep in line with the tough "big bull" hunting that seems to be how '08 will go down in history???

What's your opinion?

AS I PREDICTED 2 YEARS AGO!!!

THAT BY 2008 THE NUMBER OF BIG BULLS TAKEN WOULD BE IN DECLINE!!!

YA!!!

2008 HAS BEEN TOUGH,NO DOUBT!!!

I DO BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME GOOD BULLS LEFT & I'M HOPING HoundDawgy FINDS A BIG BOY EVEN IF IT INVOLVES DROPING THE PACK!!! ((( }> }> }> }> }> !!! )))

I NOTICED WAY MORE "SCOUTING" PRESSURE & WAY EARLIER THAN I'VE EVER SEEN IT,THERES ALMOST A "SCOUTING SEASON" THAT STARTS IN JUNE WITH UN-LIMITED TARDS & ALL THEIR GIZMO'S & GADGETS!!!

WITH ALL THE PRESSURE PUT ON UTAH'S BIG GAME HERDS I CAN EASILY SEE WHY DEER & ELK ARE ON A DEAD RUN AT 1,000 YARDS AWAY!!!

IF 20" BUCKS ARE AS SMART AS SOME OF THEM I SEEN THIS YEAR I CAN PLAINLY SEE WHY I NEVER SEEN ANY 30"ER'S,OR ARE THERE ANY LEFT ON PUBLIC GENERAL REGION HUNTS???

I'LL BET THERE AIN'T MANY!!!

I ALSO SEEN VERY FEW BUCKS THAT HAD ANY DECENT BASES TO THEM,WE HAD GOOD FEED WHEN THEY NEEDED IT,WTF???

I'M SURE Pro WILL CHIME IN WITH THE UDWR'S NUMBERS & PHONY EXCUSES WHY THE NUMBER OF QUALITY ANIMALS WERE NOT HARVESTED THIS YEAR???

I THINK ME & Prism MIGHT KNOW WHY BUT Pro WILL QUICKLY TELL US WE DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL WE ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!

bobcat OVER & OUT!!!

I think the best hunt of the year was the muzzleloader. I do agree that the Late hunt will be a good one this year. Hopefully there won't be too many broke and battered.

Bessy, just be glad you didn't draw your OIL elk tag in 1997, when a 340 bull was a giant and most guys went home with 280s.

Definitely a weaker year than expected for the great winter and spring we had for elk. We new the deer got hit hard, but the elk did great and the spring was wetter and cooler than normal, optimal antler growth recipe!!

But....then the summer heat hit like a blast furnace and the animals holed up in in what seemed like deep cool caves somewhere going unseen.
I DO know of some smoker giant bulls that were taken but kept under wraps, not everyone likes the bright neon lights ;-)

The problem with the muzzy hunt is the bulls can be pretty busted up in the antler department, a 400" bull is now a 360", ect; ect. But having said that, i think a few good bulls will be taken, but nothing too "record breaking".

With the way the weather is shaping up, I think the late hunt is going to be tough. I still can't wait for my chance at a big bull a week from Saturday!!

The big bulls here in Northern Utah are very isolated and holed up high in the thick nasty timber. Without some cooler weather or (please oh please!) snow, I don't see them grouping up or moving down low in the next couple weeks.

Yes we need snow !!! Hopefully we will have some weather before the hunt starts.
Hound dog you haven't told us where you will be hunting. We need to take cover when the shooting starts. lol

I predict Prism will kill a smoker bull opening weekend! Other than that, I predict bessy will continue to make posts that make no sense and say nothing. ;-)

I agree with the post and replies BUTTTTTTTTTT

Who would of thought that a 500" bull, 322" buck, and a 101" pronghorn would of been killed in the 08 season WTF!!!!!!!

Pro!!!

AS PREDICTED!!!

YOU JUST SAID I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL I WAS TALKING ABOUT IN A ROUND-A-BOUT NICE WAY!!!

hoof, I havent heard about a 101 in goat,do you
have any pics or a link to this?
I did hear and see a goat doc Myers killed that
is in the mid 90s.

I had my son out hunting on the general rifle deer on the Wasatch Unit. We saw 4 pretty close to matching 350 class bulls in a bachelor group, none of which were busted up.

With all the small bulls coming off the Wasatch this year, I was somewhat shocked to see the group, especially in the area we were hunting which in the past was lucky to hold a 340 bull.

Anyway, I think the late should be a fantastic hunt. Good luck to all those that drew.

I think it will be a great late hunt. I am thinking Prism is going to whack a smoker bull.

Bobcat,

I've been scouting a bit down on the Pahvant and seen some really nice bulls.

But my buddy down there has found a cool little rag horn living in a hayfield. It's only a 2X3 and really small and willow horned, but he has a neat little drop horn on one side, about 5 inches long so I think I'm going to whack that bull opening day.

Then we're going to just head for Vegas and screw off the rest of the week. I don't have any room for big antlers in the double wide anyway.

I'll try to get some pictures of this little bull if we can kill him before the Brokeback crew does, and for SURE I'll get you some pictures of Vegas. ;-)

Hey Dawg
We where on the pahvant scouting during the deer hunt. I wondered if we ever past you ? You will have to pm me and tell me what your driving, so we can say hi.
John

Big John,

I didn't go down during the deer hunt, figured I'd stay off the mountain while the crazies were out and about. ;-)

But I was down a couple of times before and I'll be back down there this weekend. You might have seen us a couple of weeks ago, we would have been the truck pulled off the side of the freeway with my buddy sitting on the pavement taking aim with his .300 mag on a coyote standing about 100 yards away... may he rest in peace.

I'm easy to spot... I'll be on a mountain bike, with a fancy little plastic helmet and a hot pink spandex riding suit with "Team Brokeback" on the back of my jersey. :)

If you pass me this week, you'll probably have to be riding a horse and pass me on the ridge. I'll be the guy leading the pack horse carrying three cases of beer and wondering where the hell my truck is.

SORRY FOR HI-JACKIN THE THREAD Prism!!!

I BELIEVE THE "DirtyDawg" IS HOLDING AT BEY A NICE BULL AS WE TALK!!!

WELL,AT LEAST THE "MUTTS" ARE!!!

ITS GONNA TAKE 3 CASES FOR Dawg TO GET IN TO THE BULL!!!

"What's my horse gonna carry?"

AWLB, if you read that closer my pack horse will only be carrying three cases of beer...

So you're horse will obviously be carrying YOUR beer. ;-)

Won't need to pack out that raghorn I'm going to shoot, because we'll just back the truck up to him in the hayfield. :)

Seriously, I'm getting excited and going scouting again this weekend.

Should be interesting with a dumbass hound guy on the mountain flinging bullets. They all look like 400 bulls to me so I'd imagine I won't be too picky.

Just hope the bull I dump will at least hit that elusive 300 mark. :) But if not and I dump a 280 bull I'm still OK with that because I'm sure over the years as I tell the story, he should grow to at least 350.

I will grow him slowly and steadily over the years and probably just stop his growth at 350. But who knows, we'll see what the years bring and how he does sitting down in my cool basement. Could really get some growth I suppose. ;-)

But even if he only scores 280 on the mountain, I'm still confident he'll grow to at least 320 before I get to the cafe.

I was up hunting yesterday on the ML spike hunt (successful by the way) and all the elk I saw were in the same areas you find them during the early hunts. As far as I can see the bulls are herded up and ready to move, just haven't yet.

Good luck Prism! Been a tough year so far, but that could mean many things?

Maybe some more tags would increase the 380 sightings? ;-)

EASY ktc!!!

YOU'RE ADDING THOUGHTS TO BRAINS LIKE Pro'S!!!

I CAN HEAR IT NOW!!!

"IN 2008 THE NUMBER OF TROPHY BULL KILLS WERE DOWN"!!!

"SO IN 2009 LETS INCREASE TAG NUMBERS"!!!

THAT'LL GET MORE TROPHY BULLS KILLED!!!

GEEZUS!!!

OH,WE WILL HAVE A SURPLUS OF TROPHY BULLS NEXT YEAR,RIGHT???

My prediction is about the same as what was seen the during the other hunts this year. A few dandy bulls and not as many top-end 360+ bulls as previous years.

There appeared to be night and day differences between last year and this years bulls in the unit I was hanging out in. An overwhelming number of "herd" bulls had good fronts and very weak backs. Hopefully this was a poor year for antler growth rather than sign that UT top-end bulls are doing a nose-dive due to the additional tags the UDNR is handing out! It will be interesting to see this year's harvest reports-age-class status! How may guys like the trend towards the 4-5 year old age class objectives now!

There was a lot of early scouting and hunting pressure this year and I'm sure some of the big ole bulls were hiding out, but you would think they would have come out of hiding for the rut...even late during the muzzy season?

HEY jims!!!

VERY TRUE!!!

RATHER THE TARDS KNOW IT OR NOT???

THIS BULL$HIT OF SO CALLED SCOUTING AKA PUSHING GAME AROUND A GOOD MONTH BEFORE ANY HUNTS START IS TOTAL IDIOTICY!!!

THIS $HIT HAS TURNED INTO PRESSURE ON THE GAME HERDS YEAR AROUND!!!

LOL. People that scout hard are idiots and people who don't scout are lazy peices of $h!t? What is this world coming to?

I think that this will be a great year for the late hunt and an even better year for shed hunters. IMO we had more grass this year then i have ever seen. The elk were scattered all over the place. The rut seemed sporadic and the temps and moon didn't help things much either.

These things made for a hard hunt= less giant bulls getting killed.

Utah isn't the only state having a less then stellar year. Many of the westen states seem to be having the same problems and haven't put out nearly as many trophy bulls as the last couple years.

It will be interesting to see the kill stats from this year and who knows, maybe with all the 360+ bulls that made it through this year we will be breaking records again next year.

We went down "looking" to see what was moving yesterday, as soon as the clouds lifted on the pahvant, Holy Moses we found some pigs!!! Just for the record, I did not see any that were broken at all. Outta 13 dandy bulls none were broken, two of which were straight up sevens and would easily push the 370-380 mark!!! So I hope everyone thinks that this year is going to suck and never puts in for the late hunt again!!

Where we were looking we did not see anyone yesterday!!! Not one person hhhmmm maybe thats why the elk were there!!!

Well, sometimes you gamble and win as did Prism. Congratulations it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

And sometimes you give it your best and it doesn't quite work out quite the way you had always dreamed. I went on the late hunt for all but two days with a family member who had drawn a tag. We hunted and glassed and glassed. Hundreds of cows and calfs were spotted and not many spikes left for the future heards.

We did spot Two groups of Mature batchelor bulls, the biggest being a 370". Great bull no Doubt but in the end it didn't work out. The next biggest class bulls were in the 330-340 range and several in this class but, not what I would have called a stellar late hunt.

I know there were units that did really well, but it wasn't on the Manti. Do you agree? What did you guys find?
