Anyone ever hunt this area for deer. I think I am going to try it out this fall. I have seen some pictures of nice bucks in local sporting good shops. It seems like a big area. Can anyone give me any tips on where to start? How is the hunting pressure and number of mature buck? I bet it gets hit good seeing how it's a general area, but I figure if I walk off the road a bit, won't have any problems.

its an ok area-find an area with very few roads-then get back in a ways and pressure will be minimal. tons of road hunters, and quite few illegal quad hunters(they ride all over the damn place). i used to hunt it alot-and there are some good deer up there. i prefer the west side, around french creek and mullen creek.

I spent 6 years hunting over there. Love the area. I agree you need to get away from roads. Greenies all over the place. a favorite spot of mine was Sheep Mountain. No roads into it. Rougher area and some tough hiking but a lot of deer. If you can spend a day or two up in there you should get a shot at a decent 4 point. I like to go in on Fence creek and get to the east face before light. Should catch a lot of animals moving around. Go get a topo map at the geological survey building at UW. They were only $5.00 when I bought them. then I went and got them laminated at kinkos for a dollar. Makes them pretty secure when Hiking. I would take three or four hikes up in there before season to get a feel for the area. Be ready to pack out if you get one. I love that mountain. May actually be back that way to hunt this year. IF not there then in area 78. Look in the platte wilderness. Not only no trails and good hunting but awesome fishing on the douglas creek. I go in through the pelton creek road and hike in from the camp ground. Where you go from there is up to you. Good elk and deer. Good luck. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Good Hunting!!!

You might want to know, the just did a burn in the french creek area this spring due to over use during the winter months. They also did a few other burns in the area too. This coming weekend i am going to go do a monitoring project on it for my major (REWM)the weekend of july 9th. Depending on how well the game and fish did on their regrowth it could be a really good food source for the deer. Very rough area with alot of rocks...great for some of those old wary bucks that use them to their advantage.
