I am looking into going after elk for the first time. Basically I am thinking this will be a grat reward for getting in shape. At this point I need a DIY hunt since I can not afford 5k for a guide but of course I would still like to see some bulls. I was looking into camping near hunting grounds and walking into the backcounty.

The eastern area of GMU 19 has been recommend as a place to start by someone who use to hunt it 10 yrs ago. The program is that seems that the success percentage is really low even for rifle season. I will be driving for Michigan so I want to stay on the eastern side of the Rockies and I only have a 2wd truck so I can not be too cravy.

Thanks for the pointers!

NOT THAT YOU NEED A 4X4 TO HUNT ELK, BUT OUT WEST YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED SOME OF THE FRIENDLY LOOKING PLACES YOU CAN GET STUCK IN A TWO WHEEL DRIVE RIG......YD.

Save your money, or try to draw New Mexico. colorado is getting to be a joke on public lands and lack of elk. At least in SW colorado.
