My Late Season Bull

LAST EDITED ON Nov-10-08 AT 02:12AM (MST)[p]First of all, I have to give a huge thank you to the Coulam boys for making this hunt a success, to mulepacker for his infinite and generous elk wisdom, to my eternally patient and supportive wife, and to the many others who gave tips, ideas, and encouragement. This is my first bull elk.

Since learning I had drawn this Utah late season LE tag, I spent a lot of time in the hills learning the area, seeing more elk and deer than I thought existed, getting in (better) shape, and learning the behaviors, patterns, and locations of big game. I logged around 180 miles of hiking before the hunt started.

I spent some time through the summer watching a big bull just a few miles from my home. Other North Cache hunters may know him as the Smith's bull. He disappeared in late September.

Then 3 days before the hunt was to start, I spotted a big bull busting over a ridge 3 miles away right at dark. A closer look the next day showed he was a shooter bull and also the same bull we had seen earlier. I spent most waking moments for the next 2 days making the 2 mile steep climb and watching him until my eyes burned. I felt confident about where he'd be opening morning.

We'd hardly left the pickup on opening Saturday when a herd of elk came over the ridge. The cows were chirping and the 5 small bulls were even bugling, something I suppose is uncommon in November. Up the hill we went to find THE ONE. But he wasn't there. My friend Clayton found a comfortable place and spent the next 3 hours glassing the canyons and then at 10am, he spotted him bedded down in a nasty canyon a mile away.

Two hours and a long, steep hike later, Tyson and I were in position with cameras rolling and I made a 320 yard shot to put the bull down. One shot, one kill with my trusty .270. He was dead in his bed.

It was an honor to share this experience with 2 outstanding young men. It wouldn't have happened without their help. Their father spotted from the valley all day long and their other brother came up and played mule and packed a quarter out on his back. I've turned them all into elk fanatics. Thank you Coulams!!!

I'm not sure exactly what he scores, but I've had three different measurements of 374 gross and my own conservative measurement goes 370 6/8, so I'm calling it a 360ish bull for now.

We have some sweet footage of the hunt including two different cameras on the kill shot and some video of the bull in the rut. You can watch by scrolling to the bottom of http://smithplanet.com/archives/my-elk-hunt

Congrats once again Jared, thanks for sharing the memory he is an absolute pig in my book, hard work really paid off, the footage is awsome not only one kill shot but two angles is unreal. you can tell a good plan really paid off.

Congrats and thanks for sharing. I love the video hearing the crack of the rifle ring out. Looked like that .270 made short work of it and put the lights out pretty well.

Congrats Jared!!!!!!!!!! That bull is definately a hawg in my book. I appreciate you sharing the video with us and one heck of a shot...."aim small miss small!" I have my late Bull hunt here in NM on 11/22 and I can hardly wait, I can only hope and dream that my outcome is as sweet as your hunt. You definately put in the time and did your homework, you earned and deserved this awesome Bull....

Congrats again!

Dan

Sweet video and great hunt. I bet between you and Mulepaker, the old North Cache will get a little tougher to draw next year.

Congrats, you earned that great bull.

Jason

Great bull, congratulations. Thanks for sharing the story, pictures and video.

I was able to track down some early season pics of my bull.

If you watched the video, you may notice that these photos were taken at the exact same time as some footage there - but by a different person at a different angle.

Anyway, I thought it was kinda cool. I think I'll print a few pictures and hang them under the mount.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-08 AT 03:05PM (MST)[p]Awesome Bull, I knew he would go down this year. Are you related to the land owner just below were you shot? I had been watching a deer in this area also but could not find a good way in. I guessed him (the bull) around 365 to 370 but now he is on the ground I will say 360ish. VERY nice.

Congrats and nice footage!

P.S. Nice shot!

Thanks! I am not related to the landowner. Even if I were, I doubt he'd let me on. :)

I guess you watched the bull earlier in the year?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-08 AT 03:29PM (MST)[p]Yes I did, however I did not draw the tag AGAIN..........
The Land owner is not the friendliest guy I have ever come across:)

Did you see the Bull taken in Clarkston?

Did you see the Buck I am talking about in that area you took your bull in?

A friend of mine came across his left side shed last year. I am sure it is the same bull you shot. There are a couple of them up there but I think you got the good one:)

My father in laws brother has a tag not yet filled. He has been after a couple up L canyon but the weather is not been helping.

Just put two and two together. MulePacker already took him. This explains why I can't find him..... Good for him.

You both achieved hard earned trophy's Good on both of you.

I will apply for South side next year I guess. Got a real good one over there we have seen.

I haven't seen a real big buck up there. I did see a ~24" 4 point yesterday. I don't suppose this is the one you're talking about.

I'm watching some more elk up there still, but no other big ones. Tomorrow should be good, now that the weather has lifted.

I'd love to see a pic of his shed. We think we have the previous two year's worth already - or at least sheds from a relative.

Sweet bull!
Cool video!
Awesome!

"Yeah, I'll shoot him"

Congrats on a great bull.. and a great shot.
And congrats to Clayton for a great spot. That kind of spot takes a lot of time and a lot of patience, but this hunt shows that patience and good glass pays off.
Thanks for the pics and the story! Gotta love it when a plan comes together!

Nope he is a bit bigger. I will have to try and get intouch with him to see if he can snap a shot of it.

Nice length on the main beams. Cool vid. Great pics. Are you using an adaptor for your spotting scope to take those photos with your digital camera? I've been using one and really swear by it.

I think both videos were hand held. The closer kill shot was with a Canon GL-2 zoomed in. The mile-away shot was handheld through the spotting scope. I didn't even know he was going to film and it just happened to focus and work out perfect for the shot.

Thanks for your comments. He should be back from the taxidermist in a month or two.

I had seen the pics of your bull but I never took the time to watch the video. That is really cool and especially since the guy in the spotting scope really lucked out in the last second to catch it on there. Congrats on a beautiful bull buddy!!!

Congrats on a beautiful bull. Who says that you can't kill a big bull on the Cache. I think that you and mulepacker have proved everyone wrong.
