I left camp last night and the old HoundDawg had yet to trip the trigger. We have seen A LOT of elk. I bet we have seen over 400 head of elk. A lot of bulls still hanging with cows but most of them were the smaller bulls. There were a couple of 320-330 class bulls still bugling and hearding cows. We even heard a couple of them fighting. I could not believe all of the comotion this late in the season. It sounded like we had timed the rut just right.

Opening morning we split up and rode ponies to where we could glass. We saw and heard a ton of bulls but nothing worth clippin the tag on. It was pretty cold but a great day for spotting elk and riding. We did spot a really nice bull in some of the most unforgiving country I've hunted. We watched this bull for over an hour before he bedded in the pines. The elk have been out all day long. They will feed for a bit and then lay down and get up 30 minutes later and feed again. There are quite a few hunters down there including the "management tag" holders. But that's the beauty of ponies. We could get to country that others couldn't drive their atv's to or didn't want to hike to.
Day #2 was an overcast day that looked like it was going to rain all day long but never did. We did a lot of driving and glassing. Again we spotted a lot of elk but no shooters. The biggest bull we saw was a 310-320 class bull with about 20 other bulls and 100 cows. There sure is a lot of spikes running around down there. I bet we saw 30 in one herd.

It finally decided to let loose on us late in the evening and that pretty much ended day 2. We have been eating great. Ed and Sharon have been in camp and it's impossible to loose weight. Dutch oven this and made from scratch that.....holy weight gain batman! I had to leave last night after dinner but will return on Wednesday or sooner if they get one on the ground. I'll keep you posted when I talk to them. As for now here is a parting shot of the kids in camp.

Looks like it was fun, I know you guys will put a bigum on the ground. Nice looking setup of camp.

WTH?? A neat tidy camp, no pile of beer cans, no passed out drunks, no party girls, no burned out rock stars hanging around??

C'mon AWLB, What have you done with Dawg??

Come on Dawg! Even a hound guy can kill a record book bull in Utah? WTF?

Maybe it is time to get Western and turn a pack of hound loose on a big nice elk track?;-)

ya turn some of those airdales loose I bet they would find an elk track. LOL

good luck I dont know if you hunt wih airdales or not dont care. just keep us posted. pic please!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

I talked to Ed in camp last night and he said that they spotted a couple of nice bulls near the same place they had been on Saturday and decided to go after them. When they got to them the weather had settled again and the rain & snow set in so they couldn't see them anymore through the clouds. They built a fire and spent most of the day under a tree out of the weather. According to Ed, when the clouds lifted the Ol Dawg tripped the trigger on a nice bull. I don't know details as to size or anything but apparently Dawg can shoot that ol P-shooter. We will have to wait for pictures when he gets back. I think they are coming back today.

Dawg tripped the trigger or tripped over the trigger? Hard to tell...what time of day was this? It will be interesting to see what he shot. Was Ike with Dawg on this hunt? We need more details.
Congrats Dawg

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS ALOT OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS IMAGE IN YOUR PEA BRAIN BUT DUE TO POOR SHOOTING TACTICS I'M STILL KICKIN!!!

I talked to the Ol Dawg yesterday and he was in the process of getting the bull to the processor and taxidermist. I'm sure he will post pictures when he gets a minute. I think his "honey-do" list is even bigger than mine.:D

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-08 AT 10:33AM (MST)[p]Just got the pictures emailed to me so I asked the Ol Dawg if I could post them for him. The story goes like this........."We sat under that tree all day in a flippin blizzard. We were about ready to go back to camp several times but decided to stick it out. After the clouds lifted there he was along with another bull. We couldn't decide which one was bigger. All my help had gone home and I wasn't about to let this one get away. It was the funnest day hunting I have ever had!"

Dawg shot this bull at 460 yards!!!! Yes you read that right....460 yards. I guess that proves those hound guys can shoot farther than 30 feet straight up. Sweet bull Dawg!! You should be damn proud of that one. Every time you look at that bull you will think of freezin your arse off under that tree!

Congratulations, HoundDawg! You better be careful posting pictures of you and your family or your carefully nurtured reputation as a crude, lawless houndsman is going to be destroyed. ;)

Gracias gang! The only part of this hunt that kind of bummed me out was I had this little raghorn 2X3 picked out down in a hayfield but that damn AWLB kept hiding my bullets every morning when I'd try to leave camp and head for the low country. :)

My cowboy buddies want me to invite AWLB back to all the camps, I guess he was quite generous with his money in a poker game. They figure anyone with that kind of generosity is always welcome in camp! ;-)

It was fun, I know there were bigger bulls on that unit but I'm not really an antler guy anyway and this one was every bit of what I wanted. I was mostly glad to spend the time with good friends and just have a good time, no pressure, just some friends out hunting.

I could have gone home empty handed and still had no regrets. Thanks for all your help Whole Lotta Bull, it was fun having you in camp even if you did spot a big bull miles away at the brink of hell. Glad you guys in camp talked some sense into me cuz I'm just dumb enough to go shoot one in a place like that.

The hunt far exceeded all my expectations and I'll remember it for a long time. Probably time for AWLB to fess up how much money he "donated" to the Cause in the poker game. :)

Sounds like you had a great hunt and an even better camp! Nothing wrong with that bull! Thanks for sharing your hunt with us!

So Jim, How much did ya donate??

Nicely done HoundDawg! Glad to see you use your trailer for a meat locker as well?;-)

"Probably time for AWLB to fess up how much money he "donated" to the Cause in the poker game."

All I'm going to say is I GOT ROBBED!!! They just toyed with me for a couple of hours and let me get up then down and then up again. Next thing you know...I'm "ALL IN" and then ALL OUT! Great time. It never ceases to amaze me when you meet somebody in camp for the first time and you feel like you've been around them for years. Very comfortable people to be around. Good cooks too!
