LAST EDITED ON Nov-10-08 AT 02:12PM (MST)[p]Well i had quite the day thursday boys and girls. I went down and picked up a left over 3rd season antlerss tag and decided to go out and see if i could get me a cow. I knew exacly where a small group where hanging out so i figured it would be a slam dunk. We'll i left my truck and began walking into my area early thursday morning and got to the spot I had seen the elk a couple nights days before. Sure enough there were the elk right where i left them. So the stalk began! They were on a steep hillside about 1000 yards and it was uphill in about a foot of snow, tough going to say the least. I worked my way up a small drainage and ran out of cover and the lead cow had me pegged so it was now or never. I took my pack off and got all set up on the pack and ranged the spot three times and got 623 yards each time. There was no wind and I had my 300RUM so i felt confident I could make the shot. I cranked the scope up to 16 power and dialed the scope to 600 yards and picked out a nice yearling cow in the back who had her head down feeding broadside and slowly squeezed the trigger and the cow dropped and began rolling down the hill and went into some thick aspens so i figured she was down and out. It took me about and an hour and a half to get to the spot where the elk were at. I walked right to the spot where i last saw here and no elk!! WTF??? so i walked up to the spot where she was feeding when I took the shot and there was a big clump of hair and some blood but not much to speak of so i followed the tracks down to where she went into the aspen only finding small specks of blood here and there in the snow and stayed on the trail until i ran out of blood and there were tracks going every which way in the snow so i had no clue as to which direction she had taken. Four hours later, cold and and frustrated I gave up and headed back to the truck kicking myself. The only thing I can figure is I shot lower than I would of liked and broke the front shoulder and as we all know and elk can go forever on 3 legs. As i was driving out of my area I ran into my boss and head guide randy along with my good buddy Scott heading in with horses to pack out our outfitting camp. So what the heck i decided to go help them. After packing up camp we decided to do a little hunting on the way out because Scott had a doe tag along with a bear tag. About 10 minutes out of camp I spotted a small group of does about 400 yards off the trail so Scott and I ditched the horses and took off after them and being that Scott had his Pre 64 30-06 we had to get close. When we were about 200 yards from the does the deer suddenly took off, thinking we got busted we sat and scratched our heads wondering what happened I glanced to my right and caught a large black object running full speed right at us, well turns out its a 350 pound black bear. So on pure instinct Scott pulls up with his 30-06 and shots this bear in the head on a dead sprint about 55 yards. Talk about luck we were soon standing over a beatiful black bear boar.
