I can't believe the luck my son is having so far this year!!!!

He was fortunate to draw four big game licenses this year, including two premium licenses. In preparation for some great tags, we spent many hours at the range shooting and working up loads. He also ran with me every day to make sure he was in shape (he even joined the high shool cross country team after running all summer).

His season started out with a youth elk hunt in NM. This was his first elk hunt and he harvested a great elk. He shot his elk mid-morning on the second day of the hunt after passing up shots at 12 other bulls. He also did his share of the work packing the bull off the mountain. Even though he weighs less than 100 pounds he packed out both shoulders without one complaint. I would like to thank all of the members on this forum who provided me with information and assistance in planning this hunt.

His second hunt was for whitetail deer in Custer State Park in western SD. his license allowed him to harvest both a buck and a doe. Although the weather was warm and the bucks weren't rutting, he did manage to harvest a nice 5x6 buck on the second morning. This was a very unique hunting opportunity ? from the spot where we sat overlooking a creek bottom, we watched a variety of wildlife including a bald eagle, bull elk, bison, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, coyotes, and prairie dogs. There aren't too many places in North America where you can experience that variety from one location in a single morning.

He filled his doe tag early afternoon on opening day.

His third hunt was for mule deer in western SD. This hunt was a three generation hunt including his younger brother, my dad and myself. The western part of the state was engulfed in a blizzard for three days prior to opening day of the season closing nearly all roads. Since we couldn't drive out the night before, we woke up at 1 am opening day and drove 5 hours to get to our hunting area before first light. He and grandpa were hunting together when they spotted a herd of deer bedded. They managed to sneak within 100 yards of the herd before my son shot the largest buck in his bed and grandpa harvested the other buck. My younger son had already harvested a nice 4 point buck an hour earlier so we had three nice bucks down, 3 miles from the truck, by 10:30 opening morning!!! (I have another thread about this hunt on the Mule Deer Forum)

These were all DIY public land hunts.
His last hunt is this coming weekend for a whitetail buck in eastern SD. Even though he has already had an incredible season, I am rooting for him to go 4 for 4.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-08 AT 07:17AM (MST)[p]What did you expect Dad? It's obvious he was willing to put in the time and effort to increase his "LUCK". Great job! I think that there is a select group out there that get there kids into the actual preperation for the hunt. Neat pictures and I'm sure some great memories for both of you.

It's always an adventure!!!

Tell your son great job!!!! I think you need to be commended also for getting him involved in hunting. I don't see many video games in this kids future.

That is a pretty impressive line up for anyone, especially a 14 year old kid. Congrats

WOW! Congratulations to your son. You're having a great season yourself, getting to enjoy his start in hunting. Your posts bring back some very fond memories of when my own son got his start. It's good stuff!

Thanks for all the great responses, guys. This, by far, is "my" best season - and I haven't even pulled the trigger yet. I would much rather watch my boys enjoy their hunts than harvest a trophy myself.

Peakfreak - he shot his mule deer with his Remington 270wsm - 140 gr nosler accubonds - RL22 powder. He used my Remington 300saum for his elk and whitetails with 180 gr nosler partitions and IMR 4350 powder. We've had both guns glass bedded and trigger jobs. Both guns will shoot 10 rounds into baseball size groups at 300 yards. However with all that preparation, his longest shot on all four of these animals was 80 yards. We love to bowhunt so we prefer getting close but were prepared for the long shot if neccessary.

Good luck to all the other father/son and father/daughter teams out there (and a few mothers). We need to enjoy it while we can. My dad is still my favorite hunting partner.

Congrats guys on your success & the great preparation involved, I enjoyed your stories & my hats off to your son for staying calm & getting it done!
I too am part of a father-son duo & have been 19 years, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Cherish those memories, the years go by fast, make sure to take plenty of photos!!!

Well my son managed to make it a perfect season going 4 for 4 on all his big game hunts.

We didn't see many deer on opening day but got to watch a small buck chase and mount an antlered doe. The doe had two small clusters of antlers. The antlers were just clumps of spikes coming out of the bases and were still in velvet. We were 99% sure it was a doe as we watched her squat to urinate 50 yards in front of us and we didn't see the correct pieces and parts. We also watched the small buck mount her. My 8 year old son was getting cold so we decided to walk a mile down the road to check out another area. After walking about a quarter mile, we checked behind us only to see a really nice 5x5 buck standing only 30 yards from where we had been sitting earlier. We attempted to make a stalk on the buck but a truck driving down the road spooked the deer off before we could get within range.

On the second morning my 14 and 8 year old sons again hunted with me in the the same area in hopes of seeing the 5x5 buck from opening morning, while my dad and 12 year old son went to another area where we had see a nice 4x4 the night before. about an hour after sunrise I heard a shot from the direction of where my son was sitting so we headed over to his locatin to see if he had found a buck. When we arrived we found him on the opposite side of the hill he was sitting on and he was watching a deer off in the distance. After I crept up next to him he indicated that he had heard the same gunshot behind him and walked over the hill to check if something might have gotten spooked in his direction. He had then spotted a buck follow a doe into a weed patch and the doe had bedded while the buck just stood guard over his girlfriend. The deer were about 250 yards out and it was hard to judge the buck because of the weeds and the fact that he never turned his head to get a side view. We could tell he was well past his ears by a couple inches and had good mass at the bases but we couldn't tell how many points he had. We determined that he was about as good of a buck as we could expect out of this area and I told my son to take the shot. His first shot missed but the deer held his ground long enough for a second shot. The buck bolted at the second shot but we couldn't tell for sure if he had been hit. The buck was running off and was just about to go behind a hill when the third shot caused him to hunch up before going out of sight. We decided to give him an hour and stiffen up before heading in his direction just in case the shot wasn't good. The wait wasn't neccessary as we found the buck dead just 10 yards from where he went out of sight with two shots in the vitals.

This was my 8 year old son's first big game hunt. He was pretty excited watching his older brother harvest his trophy.

great pics and story! Getting kids involved in hunting is one of the best things possible. I have a 5 and 8 year old, that I take with me as much as possible (when work and school allow for it). It is great time spent together, and they have a blast, from picking up turkey feathers, to following blood trails. They both wish they were 12, so they could start pulling some trigger's and flinging some arrows too!
