Can anyone help me get started? I have never hunted CO. and am trying to plan a 09 DIY Elk Hunt. I am currently in Iraq (4th Trip) and this is my homecoming gift to myself. Anyway, no one in my unit has done this hunt so I have no references for a starting point. I would like to do an archery hunt, but after reviewing the draw odds, I'm not sure that I want to limit myself to a bow.

Any help would be great. Thanks

By the way, if any of you have any hunting videos that you have seen "one to many times" me and my buddies would be willing to buy them at a reasonable price.

If your a soldier you'll do fine...you may call CO. fish and wildlife and start there with some questions you may have about hunting that state.

Thank you and all veterans for serving our country and us!!!

HOORAY!!

I have a bunch of videos I would love to send to you guys. Anything to help out!!!
Send me a PM with an address.
Later,
L.T.

Please send me your IRAQ address.

I may have some things. What is your clothing size?

Thank you for your service and tell all those serving that I am very proud and thankful for what you are doing. I appreciate your sacrifice and you absolutely deserve to treat yourself to some good ole Rocky Mountain Hunting in Colorado.

I grew up in Monte Vista, Colorado. You can get an over the tag license in Unit 80... Not sure about this upcoming year. I hope it is still possible. The San Juans are loaded with areas to go.
I haven't lived there for 22 years, so I can't tell you exactly where to go... but it is awesome.

Email me a pm and I can get more specific on your gear and DVDs.

Tell us about how many of you watch the DVD's. How many of you in your group are hunting nuts...etc.

May God Bless you.

soldierhunter,
don't be afraid of hunting with a bow. If you can use a cow call and a bugle (if you can't don't worry it doens't take much with some practice) you will have a great time the last 2 weeks of archery season here in CO. If you hunt hard, I can almost gurantee you will have more fun archery hunting elk than with a rifle. When you can communicate with them and move into position while you are talking back and forth your heart will be racing like never before! Even if you don't get one but see them and have oppurtunities you'll have a great time. Don't take this wrong, I rifle hunt too and have a great time with it every year but there isn't much more fun than calling in a bull and having him scream at you from 30, 20 or even 10 yards!!! Something you will never forget.
As for a unit, I'm sure you arent' afraid of hard work, so I'd pick a OTC that has a wilderness area or just a large area with no roads (at least 4 or 5 miles without a road) and get back in the middle where there is a very small if any amount of hunters and your success % will sky rocket!

If you have any specific questions, you can pm me if you want.

Thanks for your service!

Guys,
Thanks so much for all the video offers and great advice.
PMs sent.
I have been doing a lot of research on the CO div of Wildlife site. It is a little overwhelming for someone who has never hunted CO. before but with your advise I have been able to get a good start. Thanks again for the help. I can't wait for next year!!
