My 11 year old son has a late season (Dec. 18-22) cow tag for NM Unit 51. We've never hunted that area. Anyone have any advice for tagging a cow in this unit at that time of the year?
Well congrats on the hunt!! I know around mogote and yeso tanks there has been a herd working that area and by then I think alot will have migrated into the lower area of that unit. Good luck and if you need ant specifics let me know. There will be elk in that unit at that time. Good luck

well ckeck out the burn area behind the town of el rito it is a good bet and pine canyon is just behind that. then go through conyon madera to the top at the coral then go left back down to harris bear camp to yeso then comanche you'll end up back at the y to conyon madrea its good loop to drive you should see something on that drive.
also try up the canyon from el rito to conyon largo goes to the right it goes through some nice medows and ends up on the main road that goes from conjilon to tress piedras if you go left there it takes you to wilson hill to the T go staight towards conjilon lakesthere big medows through out that area you can loop back around through conjilon and come back to el rito on that same road by martines canyon, harris bear camp, yeso ect. get a map it wil help out lots of roads. to dheck out i cant even mention all the others to try
