LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-05 AT 11:03AM (MST)[p]Hello, I drew wyoming deer area 102 around Flaming Gorge and have never been over in this country. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to direct me as far as what general terrain I will be encompasing, any good access roads into the area( I will be pulling a camper), Hunting pressure and what ever else pertinent to the area. I'm a wyo resident and I hunt alone so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Easiest muley hunt in the west!
Park and glass! Better on horseback! ok if you walk!
you will see deer! as far as quaility you will have to figure
that out I do not want to shatter any dreams! I would just scout it and then hope its not to warm, should see alot of huge 3x3's. Bigger Buck are alot smarter and very nocturnal. I am kinda glad that did not draw and I do not have to drive out their with gas being what it is!

I hunted this area in the 1987 with my late Uncle. For a kid driving from Florida to hunt with his Uncle it was GREAT. Uncle Art couldn't get around too good so we sat at the top of a saddle in the truck on opening morning waiting for the hunters down below to push the deer up and over the saddle. And they did. My buddy filled his tag on the spot with a small 4x4 which made a Florida Whitetail look tiny. I never filled my tag that year but went back in 1991 with my wife and some friends. We all filled our tags (no monsters) with some decent bucks and purchased antelope doe tags over the counter which we also filled. The beauty of the area inspired me to move out West and here I am in Elko, Nevada for the last 10 years. I wish you luck on your Wyoming hunt. I talked to several hunters while hunting the area of Flaming Gorge and they scored on some nice Muleys (26" spread quality) while stalking on foot. fatrooster.

Thank you for the response. You mentioned horses, is there some quality roadless areas? I don't have horses but I do prefer to hunt on foot, I'm not worried about actually getting out and hunting. I'm going to scout about a week in aug. Is there good area or road to pull my camper into and camp? Also as far as quality is concerned, Do you feel there is a good population of mature 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 aged deer in the area? thanks again.

Fatrooster,
Thanks for the reply. Any ideas of general areas to atleast start scouting in? thanks again

Okay here it is!
GET AN WYOMING ATLAS & GAZETTEER.
draw an outline of zone in yellow hi-liter you steal from work!
FIND "PINE MT".............(BOTTOM,RIGHT).
Hunt it hard opening weekend,THEN GO HOME!Come back next Saturday!
The big bucks will move in to Colorado and Utah(Ya that close).
The next weekend CO,UT both open with a do! do! load of hunting pressure every BIG BOY THAT MOVED and then some will come back into WY where the hunting pressure will be extremly light!
and will start rutting(Last time hunted took a 28" 4x4 with a bit of trash in 02'mid 2nd week, had a full blown neck and was with Does),their a creek with a washed out brigde..........(very southern part of zone CO side)I can not remember the name ask the warden!you can't drive but find a place and park it and glass! put some one on your back!! don't ask!!
Horses help on the deeper draws and canyons and pack out! but confirm what I said with warden the just do it!!lol
have fun!

Rackmaster,
The area you mentioned about a washed out road across a creek with a sign is called Red Creek.

I live by unit 102 and I think it is one of the most over rated units around. There are plenty of mid 20's bucks but the trophy class bucks have went wwwaaayyy downhill compared to 10 years ago.

maybe MAPS are nowhere to be found but has an name ring!
I never said it their were "BOOK DEER BUCKS" behind every bush!
I said they are there and are nocturnal, not many, lots of big 3 pts. great bulls and antelopes!
The west easiest mule deer hunt!
I have seen great deer in this unit and if everythings right the trophy will be seen! bring on the points system!!
