Region H

A buddy and I drew out for region H this year finally after trying to hunt there for the last 4 years. We have taken a few trips up there but they were in region G. I have the topo maps and have narrowed down my options to 5 areas.

We are High Country aficionados and are very prepared and excited for the terrain we will be in.

He and I have yet to take a truely great buck and hope to be able to this year. We have seen them in G but we have never been to H. We know the quality is better in G but we really wanted a tag this year so we went for H. I am asking for some help with ideas of where to go if you don't mind and you are familiar with the region.

I don't want to spell out the 5 areas we are looking at on an open forum but if you do think you could help I would like to run them by you in a PM.

Any help will be much appreciated. I am not asking for your areas you hunt if you hunt in H. I just want to run some ideas by you and try to narrow down my prospective hunting spots to two or three.

Thanks in advance.

Your post sounds very similar to my situatuion and I was about to post the same questions. I wanted to hunt so after 5 years with no tag in WY I put in for H and drew. I have spent some time growing up in Big Piney but that was years ago. I have a good understanding of the general areas but am looking for more specifics too. I have a buddy in Big Piney that I'm waiting to hear from, hopefully he can steer me in the right direction. Any info you can share I will do the same, looks like I may be going solo this trip so can be pretty mobil. Very big area but I too want to narrow my focus.

I drew tag in H also. doing a drop camp hunt. my first time to area; maybe we can compare notes after the shooting is over. I have quad maps of area, it looks like there are lots of places for deer to hide. Good Luck

Once again, thanks for the help from those who have offered. From the information you have been generous enough to share it sounds like the whole region holds good bucks. Not great bucks, but good. It sounds like a guy is likely to find deer just about anywhere as long as he gets away from the roads and gets in above 8000 feet. Some of you are obviously very seasoned hunters and I can only hope to be able to be as successful as you have been.

Good luck to you guys and thanks again!

Wasn't there a significant winter kill in H the year before last? That's what I've been told my several guys that hunted there last season. If I were to hunt H, I would not hunt the early season and try to focus on migrating deer later in the season. Just my .02.
