New Mexico

Does anyone on the board hunt the southeastern region of New Mexico, more specifically the Dark Canyon area? I just wanted to know how the hunting was.

I hunted the foothills north and west of there last year. Hunted slightly north of there two years ago. I saw about 40 deer in 6 days, and two legal bucks.

Last year, I saw about 25 deer. Unfortunately I saw 5 coyotes, and a mountain lion. I did see some young bucks, but no shooters. I think there will be some 4 points in there this year because of last year's antler restrictions. Somebody needs to kill the predators over there before the deer are gone, though. The locals say there's a bunch of cats.

I'll tell you this, the deer there are not typical mule deer feeding on the open hillsides and then bedding somewhere you can spot 'em and stalk them. I found that they bed in the mesquite bottoms and you have to jump them up. Makes for tough field judging conditions. There's a few big ones in there, you just have to stumble onto them.

I have heard from some others who have hunted that area that you pretty much have to do some walking and jump them up. Plus the majority of the shots taken are going to be running shots. I think this may be an exciting hunt.
