Woo Hoo, I drew a late season unit 41 tag! anyone have any tips or pointers about this zone. I hunted it 3 years ago and didn't harvest. I didn't get to scout like I wanted to. It is typical southern Idaho high desert, with very few trees. Several river canyons. Any particular areas I should focus my scouting on? I will be hunting on foot, no atv's or horses. I'm training hard so I can hunt hard. I plan to scout several times before the season. Come on fellas any advise?

TBOP,

Thanks for the info, I'm familiar with the areas you described. I hunted the crab creek area in 2002, but didn't get to hunt the way I wanted to, due to not being able to get any time off. This year I have lots of time available. Yeah! I have never harvested a 24-26" buck so that would be a whopper to me. I intend to look over the big and little jacks creek area also. Do you recommend sitting and glassing to find the bucks? The area being so wide open seems to lend itself to that technique. How do you PM someone, I couldn't figure it out?

I would recommend doing a lot of glassing. Crab Creek Basin and the rim between it and Rattlesnake usually has a decent number of deer (relatively speaking). Every mature buck we saw was alone, on the move, going from one little group of does to another. The deer out there are pretty sparce, so those bucks seemed to cover a lot of country. We spent a great deal of time on rim tops glued to our binos, in areas we knew there were does, hoping that at some point a good buck would come roaming into the area. We also did quite a bit of tracking. In 2000, we had good snow and when we'd cut a fresh, lone track, we took off on it. We tracked down several bucks this way, most of which weren't what we wanted. Of the bucks we got in 2000 and 2002, one was tracked, two were spotted and intercepted as they were out roaming, and one was spotted and stalked while bedded under a rim. Every buck was by himself. We had dreams of seeing big bucks with every group of does but it didn't work out this way for us. Lots of glassing and covering lots of country. Hope this helps.

Awesome tips, I really appreciate the info. I scouted the extreme southern portion of the zone near the reservation and border with Nevada. That is basically the only high country of the zone. Some really good looking country down there, but I didn't get enough time off to hunt it. Did you draw this year? I drew for deer but not for elk. Thanks for the info and good luck.
