This is the largest bull my dad has ever taken. He is an OTC Idaho bull from Soda Springs. We were curious what he might score. Is he big enough to have him scored? He's a 6X7.

I would have to agree with D13er, about 340. Gross would be higher. It's a little weak on the brow tines and mass, but has excellent G3's, length, spread and the royals are great.
Nice pictures.

A great bull for sure, especially for an OTC tag. I don't think he'll come anywhere near the minumum for B&C. I'd say he's somewhere in between 310" and 320".

I second mtnhntr 320 would be tops, absolute tops and that would be stretching it. Main beams about 49 to 50, 1's and 2's about 11 inches, thirds around 11 inches, 4ths around 19 and 5ths around 14. Mass is about 50 inches maybe. That adds up to 280 inches plus width. If width is 44 inches that would add up to 324 gross plus the seventh of about 8 inches. So that would be around 332 and thats stretchin the tape.

Just my two cents. I definitely like the sneakin up on the hay stack mount as well ROFL!

Congrats to your father. Nice bull, sure it made him happy. I would say 340+. I'd like to know what he scores on a score sheet. A couple of the scores are pretty low, but what do I know. I'd shoot him and be happy!!!

Sure, I'd download a sheet from B&C and score him. It would be worth your and your dad's time. Better than watching something on the idiot box.... Anyway, don't you get a kick out of the variance in estimates of score on pictures posted? Yet guys are sure they missed an opportunity at, or passed on, an XXX buck or bull. Very few are good enough to get real good at field guessing.

Who cares what he scores... That is a beautiful bull. Congrats to your Dad.
Jim

Interesting scores. I wanted to do this for him. He's one of the nicest 'gizzy bears', as we call him, you'd ever meet. I'd love to get him name in the books on his elk. He got this bull when he was a junior in high school, about 26 years ago. Him and my grandpa were on a father son hunt. Story goes that this bull was rolling around in a bog when they found him. According to my grandpa, the elk was stuck, so my dad, 6'2, 250lb defensive line player, led the state in stacks, jumped on the elk and killed him with his knife by cutting the bulls esofigus. So the story goes. I can't confirm or deny it. All I know is my dad is a big, strong man and if anyone could do it, he could. Who knows. Sounds a bit fishy though, but a fun story non the less. Doesn't fish and game score big game for free in the spring? Anyone confirm this? I'd like to take him to get him officially scored for my dad. Good guesses, hard to say.

OMG you never cease to amaze us with these stories.....wonder if that would qualify as fair chase??

JB

so what.. It was a fun story my grandpa told us about our dad. Who cares if its true or not. Exactly what other story did I amaze you with JB? Oh, how about that one where I called you a jerk, oh wait, that's not amazing. Another famous MM quote.... thats for you tageater.

JB is bigger than your Dad and meaner than a junkyard dog. I see a fight brewing here....maybe a cat fight. LOL

Brian

HE'S AN ONERY SUM BEACH TOO!!!

KEEP SCREWIN WITH HIM & I'LL GUARANTEE YOU THE SCORE WILL BE GOING DOWN!!!

You may not believe ME, but i too have heard the story of how that bull died, and it is indeed true what you said, but you forgot the part about where when he jumped onto the bulls back, he'd dropped his knife in the mud, and used his teeth to crush the esophogus. He is indeed a truely amazing man!

330-40 I think his front G1,2,3s are where he could pad his score. Absolutely sweet elk though. I love his backs.

Stinky if you think thats a 320 bull i'd hate to see what your gonna pop next year with pro! it'll shame spidey! Haha He does have a weak front end buuuut, that back end more than makes up for it. here is how i have it

Beams 50
Width 40
mass 50
1st's 15
2nd's 10
3rd's 15
4th's 25
5th's 15
cheater 6

That totals a gross score of 356, keep in mind i scrimped on some of those numbers like the width and mass, and maybe gave a little on the 4th's however all in all i bet im within a few inches to its gross. now the net aint gonna be worth a purty penny but nets are for fishes right?

Hell yes.

I don't think it costs more that $35 bucks or something like that... Check on their website. I'm sure it's there.

My guess is that is his bull would meet B&C and you should do it if that makes your Dad smile. Why not score him to see where he stands in line. Scoring your bull doesn't mean anything less of your appreciation of your bull. Score or no Score... I know your just wanting to see where he stands in great bulls. That is why B&C is there. Go for it.

Your bull is one of the few that I have seen that has similar characteristics to my Father in laws bull.

I love the cheaters coming off the 5th.

Wow! Thats a way nice bull! It does resemble his alot. Ya don't see many bulls with really long 4ths. I would rather shoot something with character than a high scoring typical myself. We are really itching to get him scored now. Thanks for the help.. to those who helped. I'll update the offical score when he's done. :) On a different note.. way to sturr the pot kilo and bess, you'd just love to see a fight, I'm sure of it. Yep, nod your heads in agreement as you read. I post a clean ligit pic of my dads bull and some just wanna sturr $hit up. Cyber fighting.. gotta be kidding me.
JB.. no argument intended, just a remark to tageater from a post on the Campfire titled: Famous MM quotes.
And tag, making fun of my father, a man you don't know... boy... not even funny in the least bit. I better stop now. x(

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-08 AT 10:16PM (MST)[p]So i take it you didn't get the prescription refilled?

I wasn't trying to make fun of him so much as you and your believable story(s). I was just trying to one up you, with a really believable one, kid.

Because i posted a quote by YOU, about JB, you took a shot at me? Stirring the pot? looking for a little cyber fight? sounds like you did a bit of that yourself, which i'm cool with. i can take it, i'll dish it out too.

Edit- has been sent via PM.

Sheesh, who cares about score. That's a killer bull, and he looks really good on the wall. Why is it all about the score? That's a goood bull and a trophy.

Its hard to imagine you can pack so many elk pros into one place. 320? 11 inch 3rds? Are you $*itin me. That bull is considerably bigger than that. Hopefully the guy postn the pics knows that and is just lookn for attention or support.

I've never had the opprotunity to shoot a bull so I have no idea if he was even big enough or what he would even score. Really no clue. I figured I'd find out what some of the bull hunters thought the score may be. The pics are deceaving, he's big, to me anyway. I think we'll just take him to fish and game and get him offically scored.

This isn't really related i just thought it was cool that this bull has similar extra to your dads bull. I was watching this bull last winter but unfortunalely it was hit by a van. Scored a little over 360

Very interesting! They are quite similar. Thats too bad a nice bull like that gets hit by a van.
JB.. Fish and Game scores for B&C. I had two mule deer scored about three years ago that were my father in laws deer from the 50's.

I DON'T KNOW JACK SQUAT ABOUT ANYTHING!!!

BUT MOST SCORERS DON'T WORK FOR THE FISH & GAME!!!

NOT OFFICIAL B&C SCORERS ANYWAY!!!

NOT SAYING THERE AIN'T SOME AROUND!!!

LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST???

SOMETHING WE NEVER HAVE AROUND HERE!!!

I THINK CUPSY IS JUST SCREWIN WITH YOU ANYWAY???

WHY HELL,I'LL BET IF YOU TAKE THE BULL DOWN TO HIS HOUSE HE'D HAVE AN 8 COURSE MEAL WAITIN FOR YOU,HE'D SCORE THE BULL & YOU 2 COULD KISS & MAKE UP,HELL HE MIGHT EVEN HAVE A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH AFTERWORDS!!!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-08 AT 10:45AM (MST)[p]BHWAR,

Which F&G Dept. scored your deer, was it Idaho? If so, how much did you pay for the scoring and did you get all of the paperwork from them too? Never heard of them doing it, not saying that they or some other Dept. would or could not do, just asking.

Did they have the Fair Chase forms etc at their office?

Like our illustrious Bobcatbess stated, JB IS AN OFFICAL MEASURER for B&C. I'm sure he would gladly take care of you and your mount.

Nice Bull no matter what, congrats to your dad.

Brian

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-08 AT 12:28PM (MST)[p]If the wall the elk is hanging on has its 2x4s on 16" center he is closer to 48" wide.

I had the deer scored at the Pocatello Field office. I didn't pay anything to have them scored. I did get the paperwork for them both but neither scored really high. The largest scored a 160, the other a 142 due to extra's. I don't remember the fair chase form. There were several deer, elk, moose and bear getting scored that day. One bear made the book. It was taken in Central Idaho from what I remember.
*I just called the Pocatello office, yes, they are offical scorers for B&C and it's free. They normally do the scoring in March. Looks like we will have an offical score soon! :)

ALL B+C measurers are volunteers and it doesn't cost a dime to have your trophy scored. If it meets the minimums, and you would like to enter it in the book, that is when you pay the entry fee.

You can get a list of official measurers in your area from the B+C office or web site. Contact one of those listed and arrange to take the mount to him to have it scored. While pictures are notoriously dfficult to derive actual scores, I doubt this bull will make the minimum entry criteria. It is a great bull, but probably won't NET more than 350, and that may be a bit high.

You can get a close approximation of the score by measuring it yourslef using the worksheets from B+C. If you come up with a score that is even close, then take it to an official measurer. There are some fine points to measuring that can't be learned from the books.
