Here is my first elk..not a bad bull. He was young, but the Montana hunt was ticking to a close. Friday the 28th at 8:15am. I will never foget it.
Left home in Billings--took the wife to the inlaws on Wednesday 26th in Provo, UT. Left from Provo to go back to Billings Thursday. Hunted one last time Friday(got the elk). Dropped the elk off at the butchers in Billings at 4pm Friday. Got back to Provo at Midnight. Then I just got back to Billings an hour ago(Sunday the 30th at 11pm).
Would I do it again next week.......YES. Nothing in the world beats that feeling when the tag is in your pocket and the animal is in the cross-hairs. What a rush.

Ruger M77 30.06 Nosler 165gr. Accubond. 147 yards...fell over at 250.

waaay good on you...congratulations, and thank you for sharing it with the rest of us...nice bull, too...

Congrats on a very nice first bull!! If we could all only be that lucky. He is a good bull and looks like you are very happy. Way to go on a successful hunt and it sounds like a well earned elk (travel time and all). Happy hunting and best wishes for many more.

Great job and great bull! Thanks for posting. It seems like we haven't seen as many bulls posted this year.

There aren't many that can say their first bull was nearly as good as yours.

I see you shoot Accubonds out of a M-77. Can you shoot tight groups with that bullet? I tried to use them in an M-77 and couldn't even keep them on the paper. A guy at the range said M-77s won't shoot that bullet. I went back to the old Core-Lokt and dialed it back in to tight groups. Sorry to go off topic, just wondering.

Anyway, good job and next time put the wife on SkyWest and save the hunting time.

My buddy measures and reloads my rounds for me. He is quite the amo gooroo. I do fine with them. He has the same gun as me and he shoots the accubond and the partition and likes them both. I have killed 2 mule deer, this elk, and an antelope with this gun and I always shoot the same rounds. I loved my shots on this elk, and last years deer. This year's deer and last years goat not as good of shots...but I'm pretty sure that it was me and my jitters and not the gun or bullets. I feel that way because I almost always shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards at the range. Hope this helps.

Congratulations, Stu!! That is a very nice elk. I also took my first elk this year (back in October) and it truly is something to remember!
