I am going to try this again since the last time I asked this question, I received a few great suggestions and spots to locate cow elk. Your suggestions resulted in a successful hunt - so THANKS!

My good friend and his 12 year old son drew an antlerless elk tag for the springville hunt. He has been out 4 times without seeing a cow elk. Plenty of larger bulls, but no cows. As you can imagine, my buddy is anxious to give his son a good experience this being his first big game hunt. I do not hunt this area and usually not this time of year. Would anyone be willing to share a few spots that he might have some success or chance at success?

The area they can hunt is above Springville/Spanish Fork, Spanish Fork Peak, Hobble Creek area, and looks like the Provo Peak area.

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Im assuming this is the late season hunt?
Just wait till the snow flies and drives them down into the foothills. As soon as they move down all you need to do is drive the roads close to the hills and its all spot and stalk from there. Once they move down its a fairly easy hunt with a large number of animals to be found from Provo to Nephi.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward, whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both, for a wounded man shall say to his assailant "If I live I will kill you, If I die you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

There is about fifty cows above mapleton right now. They aren't very high and it would be an easy stalk. They are right in between trojan and maple canyon as of 1 hour ago.

Thanks for the help and directions. We will be trying that tomorrow morning and hopefully we can spot them as well. I have a couple of people coming to help locate to see if we can't get him a shot at an Elk. If/when he succeeds, I will be sure to post a picture of his smiling face. I showed him your post last night and I could see him get excited again. I am assuming that dirt road at the base of that range is public land and I won't get in trouble for driving.

Thanks again.

If you are on highway 89 going south, about 1 mile before you tie onto highway six there is a dirt road that turns east. It drops down into a gravel pit where a lot of people target shoot. You go past that towards the bench and the road will tie onto the fire break road. They have been doing a lot of construction up there and i'm not sure that the firebreak is still open. If you want to locate the elk first before you head after them there are a lot of good roads in mapleton that give a great view of the mountain. If you need any help or suggestions where to go i'll be out and about tomorrow you can give me a call. 801-717-5011

Still here today. Good luck

Good on ya NeverStopHuntin - love to see people that are so willing to help out another hunter!! You will be rewarded down the road I am sure.

Best of luck to the young hunter and hope he gets his elk. I remember my first elk (a cow also with my bow) and the joy and satisfaction that came with that harvest!!

Ryan,

Thank you thank you thank you!!! The elk were almost in the exact spot you marked above and the boy was able to put down his first big game animal. He needed only one bullet and dropped the cow right in her tracks. What a hike though. When we peaked over the ridge above your "X", there were about 100 head of elk spread out all over. When he shot, the whole hillside moved up and over the top - along with about 25 deer. What a site to see. I was suprised to see we had hiked around 2500 feet in elevation according to my GPS. I didn't think that the boy could hike that far let alone me. But after a "heckofa" hike out of there, they got the animal out around dark and he is still telling stories to his friends.

Thanks for your willingness to share information. If you ever need hunting help, don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks again.

Congrats. I'm glad he was able to connect. Those mountains are steep and i'm sure it was a pain to get it out but that will just make it more rewarding. And add a little to the story. If you have some pictures post them. If you need help posting you can email them to me [email protected]
