ARCHERY HUNT CHANGE.

The DWR of utah has changed the arychery hunt.
the dates are from AUG 15-SEPT 11.
But, from AUG 15-SEPT 1 you can only hunt one region of your choice. then from SEPT 2-SEPT 11 you can hunt any region that you want.
With a cap of 16,000 and an unlimited # of tags per region.
They say that it is to cut back on the hunting in southern utah.
So, When you buy a tag all you have to do is say what region you want to hunt. If everybody wants southern utah region then that will kind of off set the unlimited tags to any region. shouldnt they say that there are only a certian amount of tags to one area. Then say that it would be open to all areas on SEPT 2-11.
Or am I just the only one that doesnt quit understand.

I understand it the same way. One of the softest changes I've ever seen, but a lot of archery hunters went and voiced their oppostion at the RAC meetings regardless. Now they are furious that the DWR didn't make a change based on democracy - their voices were not heard whaa whaa whaa. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time. The DWR has all my compassion after reading the spirited posts on here.

I haven't heard anyone complain about this change. What thread is that going on in?

The choose your region for the first two weeks is simply a data mining exercise to show how many folks actually choose to hunt the southern region.

I think they are going to find that it's not that many folks. If so then it will be appropriate to limit permits by region in the future. I think they already have the data from surveys, but it's not as accurate as permit sales. At least not accurate enough for some from the southern region :)

Cheers,
Pete

Pete,
its not on any thread. IT is coming right from the horses a#$.
if you go to
www.wildlife.utah.gov
look for latest news and you will find a sentence saying

I LIKE TREE HUGGING, AS LONG AS IM CLIMING TO MY TREE STAND!!

I've seen the rule change. I was refering to archers complaining about having to pick your region on the forums.

My questions was to smellybuck about this quote "Now they are furious that the DWR didn't make a change based on democracy - their voices were not heard whaa whaa whaa." I haven't seen type of complaining anywhere.

Cheers,
Pete

You ought to check out the Big Game and Archery forums on the Utah Wildlife Network, plenty of complaining to go around over there.

I think next year we will see the most archers in the South than in any year past. With all the newly opened spike region in the South, archers now have many more choices to hunt both elk and deer at the same time. Maybe making the statewide archery changes and opening spike elk statewide at the same time was some backdoor ploy to boost the numbers in the South the one year they are tracking so the next year they can have a way to ligitimize a by region draw for archers.

Hey UtahArcher77, Im not really into conspiricy theorys or anything but we are on the same page, there is something cook'n here and it dont smell good! Ya just a chance you have to pick a reigon for deer but you can hunt spike bulls (or cows) on possibly the best elk units in the state in the south with unlimited archery elk tags given out, thats not going to make people put in for southern right? SO they can hunt deer and elk the same time!

Yep...the southern boys thought they had overcrowding before. They are the ones whining about all the hunters. Now look at the can of worms they opened up. I too think that the southern part of the state is going to see more hunters than they have ever seen before.

Personally I think that's great. I don't hunt the south so it will be nice not to have all those extra hunters running around. It just might be a little more peaceful up here in the northern half of the state next year.

It's always an adventure!!!

I've never hunted the Southern region before. But with all this fuss, I'm headed down now. I think a lot of archers will be heading down there just to see what those southerners are trying to protect. After all, it can't be more crowded down there that it is up here in the North!

ugahunter,
you'd be surprised how crowded it can get.
two years ago, about 3 out of every 5 cars where hunters, this last year was a bit slow do to gas prices, but I think this next year will get a little bit more crowded with this new rule and gas at the price it is now.

Explain to me how it is overcrowded on the bow hunt? There is roughly 7,000 archery hunters hunting the southern unit. That is also roughly the same amount of muzzleloader hunter's. And then the rifle hunt has over 11,000 hunter's.

So why is it an overcowding issues for bowhunter's yet for the muzzy and rifle guy's it is still ok for hunt number's.

The area I hunt in southern region has been very crowded on the archery hunt the last few years. This year there were camps everywhere, opening morning looked like a nascar race except with quads going up the road. I went back on the muzzy hunt and there were only 5 camps in this same area. Maybe its because everybody is crowding into the higher country for the archery hunt, and then they spread out on the later seasons but the archery hunt has been the most crowded by far.
