I was fortunate to draw a Unit 54 3rd Season Tag. I don't know much at all about this area and was hoping that someone could shed some light on what to expect, where to go in the unit, horses, atv's or foot. Any info would be appreciated.

try around soap creek, two years ago they were thick up there also try up by stueben and stevens creeks, three years ago i jumped a 6x6 buck up stevens creek but i had a cow tag(go figure). the trails up there are rough we went up tr609 with an old f150 and people were looking at us like we were crazy. a jeep or 4-wheeler would be best. soap creek has good access.

Congrads on drawing your tag. Unit 54 is beautiful country and the high country is full of bucks right now. Most of them will be in the sage and sage/aspen transition by the time your hunt starts. Soap Creek will have lots of deer but will also typically have a lot of traffic. The east side of Curricanti Creek will be productive if there aren't very many elk hunters there. Even the sage brush country is quite steep so be prepared to bust your butt looking for that big buck. The Flat Top Mountain area should be good as well. You should see 10-20 bucks a day so if you're not seeing many deer you might consider moving. Horses will get you into the wilderness but if you aren't going that high you won't need them. ATV's will be easier on your truck, but you'll have to hike to most places. Good luck, Steve
