How could you pass on a bull like this with broken 5th's. Well this ol boy didn't. This is another huge Nevada bull and the hunter is Bill Shields.

Have you ever passed on a broken bull and made yourself sick after the fact? I wouldn't know but I'm sure there are several that have.

Haven't had many opertunities to pass on broken bulls, but I wouldn't even have to think about this one. Great looking bull!

Wow Thats one heck of a nice bull! What area were you in looks like table mountain area.
Again CONGRATS on a sweet bull.....

Boy, that is a nice bull. Love how an elk rack looks riding on the back of a mule/horse. Would love to see a rack of that size riding securely upon the "Grim Racker."

Broken or not, that bull is awesome! I kind of wish he was just a big 5--I want one! Congrats.

That is a sweet Nevada bull! Congrats to the hunter.

Anyone that would pass on a bull like that over a VERY fixable broken point needs their sanity evaluated!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

"Management bull"??

Yup, by UTDWR standards that is a management bull. I said that a bit tongue-in-cheek because I think the DWR is crazy to kill monster bulls like that under a management bull program. It would be so easy for someone with a management tag to break off a G5 and and haul off a monster with half the bonus points that the regular guy needs.

I didn't mean any disrespect to the tremendous bull or the hunter, just shooting my mouth off...

O.K. Fill the rookie in on "Management bull" and "Management buck". I keep hearing these terms. Maybe it is a Utah thing.

Utah has a "Management Bull" hunt on some of the best limited entry units in the state. Basically, you can shoot any bull that has less than 6 points on one side--doesn't matter if it's broken or not. Ostensibly, it's just a way to kill more bulls on these units where the bull to cow ratio has gotten out of whack in the DWR's opinion. I don't disagree with having a management hunt to take out some of the "true" monster five points on these units. (There are some monster fives out there that run out the 6x6s and 7x7s and do the breeding.) I just hate encouraging people to do the wrong thing, breaking a trophy and denying people who have put in for almost two decades that tag and animal.

Once again, nothing to do with this bull or thread or state.

Sorry again. Didn't want to sidetrack your thread on an awesome bull. Did you ever pull a tape on him? Just wondering what a great five would score.

You mean to tell me that in a "management bull" unit hunters are given the opportunity to shoot huge bulls and actually break off one of their points to be legal?
That is crazy! This by chance isn't a way to keep license and application fees down is it? WOW! How does the state of Utah convince their game board of this idea. Let me guess CASH COW.

I believe this is a 400 class 6 point. Not sure what it scored as a 5 point.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-08 AT 11:05PM (MST)[p]You can't legally break a point off but the way it's written it's OK if its broken so it just encourages guys to shoot the 400 inch bull, break off a point and have it fixed later.

Money is always part of "management" but I think this is just a way to kill more bulls without raising the number of LE tags and getting people excited.

UT DWR has found another way to kill more bulls by letting thousands of spike hunters hunt these primo units this year. That ought to make the guys who have waited 16 years for a tag happy...

All that said, Utah has a problem with maintaining quality and keeping herd numbers in check. They have given out huge numbers of cow tags to keep the total herd down. Of course that whacks our the bull/cow ratio so they need to kill more bulls. But we seem to like 350 plus bulls so we scream bloody murder when they propose raising tag numbers.

I think the best answer is to increase total herd numbers. That drives the cattlemen crazy. They want all the elk gone. I think they need to make it lucrative to the cattlemen to raise elk and less cattle. Some have figured out that they can sell a chance at a 400 inch bull for $10,000+. That's a lot of beef...

As always, there is no easy answers.

On the bull, I had him guessed in the 390s as a 6, 370ish as a 5. Awesome bull anyday anywhere.
