Pahvant Hunt

Hey everybody,

A friend of mine has 14 points, and wants to put in for the Pahvant any weapon hunt. We plan to start scouting it a ton this year (hopefully he draws the tag within the next 20 years... haha), but there's no way he can afford a guide.

My question is, what are the odds that an average guy can go shoot a nice bull?

Would anybody be willing to give me a starting point for scouting?

Thanks for any info. I'm just excited to be able to go on a hunt like this. :)

Whats a "nice" bull? I think a do it yourself hunter who scouts and hunts everyday could kill a 360 bull on that unit. Reaching over the 370 mark would be A LOT more difficult taking out the luck factor. 360 bull on the pahvant is a good bull, but if his sights are set higher, good luck. What knowledge does he have of the unit?

Sorry, I should have defined that before. A 350 bull would make him the happiest man alive. 330, 340.... Both would be more than fine.

He has a little knowdledge of the unit, but has never had the chance to hunt it with anyone else. He has no problem putting in the time to find his bull, but any info that we could get on where to start would be awesome.

Loomis- Thanks for the PM!

i live right next to the unit and had an 08 tag archery and i spent some time up there during the rifle and saw a ton of bulls. i know a few spots that might be good so if he does draw a tag let me know and i can help you out.

I AM THE ULTIMATESHEDFREAK!!!!

Your buddy probably won't draw, even with 14 points. There's still a pretty big pile of "MAX" guys applying for these premium areas. Good luck, I'm right there with you.

Is your friend applying for the early or late any weapon hunt? There were over 200 applicants with 13 bonus points or more last year for the (early) any weapon permit on the Pahvant. There were 9 bonus permits given. Your friend most likely still has a long wait to be guaranteed a permit on the Pahvant early hunt, but he could possibly draw a bonus permit on the late hunt. Good luck.

He is aware that he probably wont draw the tag next year. He was simply asking where to start scouting! Is it really a bad Idea to start scouting a few years before you draw a tag? Give the guy a break!

If your friend would be thrilled with a 350 bull and happy with a 330-340 class bull, look at other units. No need to wait up to 5-10 years. There are many units that would give you a great chance of a 330-350 bull. Good luck.

Yeah, I understand that. He is defenitely waiting to hunt the Pahvant. He know it could be several years before he draws, but doesn't care.

Like I said, we're really just going to start scouting it hard this year, if he gets lucky, then great, if not, we'll just make sure to be prepared when he does draw.

Thanks for all of the PM's everyone. :)
