Not that it matters but I got an email chain from a friend today that said that the spider bull actually moved off the Monroe and was killed by Mossback on the Fishlake unit near Johnsons Ranch.
I guess it's possible since the units border each other and bulls will travel to rut but seems hard to believe since I had not heard this before. Can anyone verify this or is it just rumormill BS?
 
Who cares? Doesnt matter the gov tag killed him so it dont matter where it was shot

These rumors never cease to amaze me. The hunter that harvested the bull had the gov tag, so he could've shot the bull anywhere. However, he was still on the Monroe. Maybe someone associated with a CWMU thought it would boost sales to start that rumor, who knows!
 
Pretty possible really, I heard last years Ryan bull was herded off Indian Peaks over to Pahvnant. Those Moss guides are even better at rustlin' than guiding.

Why would anyone make up these stupid stories & who is gullible enough to buy it?
 
I really could care less where the bull was harvested either, but I have to admit I found it facinating how much attention the bull created with so many strong opinions and all these different stories and versions of stories. This did get me wondering how far bulls have been known to travel between their summer range, rutting areas, and winter range.
 
Now thats funny avsman and bingo, an elk will go as far as needed to find that sniff of a scent he is followin.

He was killed and the circus has left town and all is quiet in paradise again!

you don't think it may have something to do with the fact its the pending new world record.....?
 
The spider bull is nothing but a MYTH!!!!! He was never even in the state of Utah.....all video and pictures are FAKE! The bull was shot in New Zealand and photshoped into pictures in Utah.....Any of you that believe it was in Utah are crazy......dont worry about trying to put in for the Monroe....there are no elk there!!!!!!

All these rumors crack me up......just come down here.....there is NO ELK in Central Utah.....you guys have been FOOLED all these years here on MM.....You can not believe a THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MONROE MTN FOR SURE! ALL YOU ELK HUNTERS WITH POINTS SHOULD PUT IN FOR THE MONROE. THE SPIDER BULL HAS BEEN SPREADING HIS GENE POOL AROUND THERE FOR YEARS.
 
So here's my thought on the spider bull... i got to talking with a guy out of El Jebel, Colorado who raised elk, large bulls especially. He told me how he'd hauled bulls down to arizona and dropped them on private land and event a the reservation for guides could have "for sure" big money trophy for their clients. So what i think is someone in central utah tried to do the same number and the bull got loose. I have never once heard of a wild bull elk scoring 500 inches, mid to higher 400's but never 500! i mean looking at the bulls antler the totally look indentical to farm raised bulls. Can you imagine the nutriton and what not that took to grow those things. And i sure can't remember any bull coming out of Utah ever that had anything close to those genetics... and with the small army mossback has patrolling the state i don't get how a bull of this caliber hadn't been seen until this year.
 
I have to agree with FLEH, Predator and Anterrick, there are no elk in central Utah. I sure couldn't find any to kill!

First of all the spider bull is an elk.
Second, he was a wild elk. Wild as any other elk and harder to kill than most.
Third, since he was an elk and a wild elk I could care less where he came from. He is dead and gonna be BOBCATBESS's and all of our world record!
Forth, if the BOBCAT would of killed him I suspect he would be on here "tuning up those who said it was a ranch bull".
Fifth, It does not piss me off when you mention transplant. It hurts my feelings to see my friends look stupid.

The Spider Bull is a fantastic elk, in and of himself, deserving all the praise he gets for growing to the 500" mark.

As for being everyone's world record that would only be true if everyone recognized the B&C as the end all to all wild animals taken. He will be the world record for those that belong to the club and those that believe in the club's system of acceptence. That's not everyone.

He is not the biggest wild elk to be killed that has been offically scored with the B&C system. He is one huge bull though and I give him all the respect 'he' deserves.

The biggest bull I know of lost his chance at being in the "Club" because of the POS that shot him. Some of us just like to know what the biggest representative of an animal that has been taken in the wild. (Have to say 'wild' now with the introduction of game farm animals in our hunting culture), could care less what some club says their member killed.

For those of us that aren't true believers in the religion of 'The Book' he's not our world record.

Was the shipsey bull ever officially scored? I am curious if B&C ever said why they didn't enter it? I know rumors flew about that bull as well. In the end, it was not awarded the B&C world record.


As far as "not everyones world record".. you could say Obama isn't everyones president too...However, He is what he is, The "President Elect". I know Cupsy voted for him. Probably bobcatbess as well. Maybe even you Kent?

Brandon, Ya that bull was scored, 502 6/8 gross and 477 0/8 net. The problem was Shipsey himself and his past misdeeds, a shame for the bull itself. That's the problem with the book, the animal has no say in who shoots him.

Of course Spider will be the B&C recognized World Record, I think that is right for their rules and should be stated as such. Not as, he is everyone's world record whether you like it or not. That implies there is no other animal in the 'World' that stacks up on 'Record', that's not true. It's one groups opinion. As hunters we're fairly independent anyway and when someone says, Like it or lump it, most of us would rather lump it.

As for Obama, I only have this to say. Watch yor topnot.

sorry for being ignorant- i have never heard this story. do you or anyone have any more info? where was it killed? when? who was this guys who killed it? was he a "kurt Darner"?
 
The thing that convinces me that Spidey was an wild elk, is that he knew where to hide himself once the masses of hunters and sightseer's started to converge on his every move. A "ranch" bull would have had no idea of what hiding from people even was about, and would have been harvested the first day while grazing in a meadow.
Spidey knew just where to go and become "lost" for over 6 weeks and it wasn't just a freak thing that no one could find him.
There were numerous hunters who had the same opportunity to hunt this magnificent animal, and a lot of talented guides and hunters looking for him, but it took a lot of patience and perseverance to make this happen.
Again, congrats to Denny...

I agree with this totally. We were after him the entire bow hunt. Had video of him before the season, trail cam pics two days before the hunt, then he vanished. We did see him once (a glimps going through the trees) a couple days into the hunt, but no sign of him after. It seems wierd that he would have that instinct if he was farm raised. Its not hard to dissapear in that jungle but he definatly had the sense to do it.
 
REDDOG, I don't know as much about what goes on in the muley world as I do elk or coues. My only knowledge of the Burris buck comes from my cousins that live in the Cortez/Dove Creek area and that's not much. I think I remember something about another buck that was bigger, killed years ago and the rack just sitting in a barn or garage. Someone, Kurt Darner ?, got ahold of the rack and had it mounted and tried to say he killed it recent. Submitted it to the B&C as a world record. Whether I even came close to the real story, I will answer your question based on this.

Talking free range and not pen raised here. The B&C have their club and set of rules, P&Y also. If you join the club you can submit an animal and if it is the biggest that meets their rules it will be the B&C world record. If you or the way you took the animal don't meet the requirements then the animal is rejected. That's all fine because it is a club record for members only. It celebrates the member's achievements, accomplished under their guidelines. So their records are B&C world records, not always the biggest animal that was ever taken, scored and recorded on paper somewhere.

So my feeling is that, the Burris buck is the B&C record holder, if there is a bigger known buck out there that no fault of it's own is rejected or just not submitted, then that is the over all world record. I like all big animals and think they should all get their due.

The B&C is just one view in the hunting culture, I have no problem with it in it's own strucure. Try and shove it down my throat as the end all and I get irked. People who believe their religous veiws are the only way to God and want to tell you so also irk me.

This is a subject like politics and religion, it can cause arguments between people that are normaly friendly towards each other. I am guilty and will try not to do it again.

Bobcat does this look like anything from the wild, This was a muzzleloader bull shot 4 years ago, Nobody seen this bull, a lucky hunter who had no clue where to hunt decided to go after a smaller bull when this bull come out of the tree's. everyone was shocked, nobody had seen this bull ever, no sheds, no video.

If he was a ranch bull the wild ones would chew him up and spit him out during the rut,I have seen 340 wild bull killa ranch 375 and over a 400 bull during the rut. The same would happen to a ranch bull in the wild.

I don't have any idea? Ask the boys over at tines up. They posted there that they have the sheds and Denny will never see them. It seems odd to me too, however, they have picked up some pretty big sheds on that MTN. They were also hunting the bull...

Bess, I have held the rack.. and no, it doesnt look farmish to me. So yes, I would argue that. The only thing that is odd is that he scored over 500 inches on Utah public ground. But, you add in all the facts.. and you could NEVER convince me this was a farm bull.

I've held it also and it is simply awesome and amazing.
I have seen some wild bull elk racks other than Spider that looked nothing like you would picture out in wild, but strange things do happen.
It seems strange that we didn't hear more about this bull until the spring of 08, but if you find something like him, and think there may be a chance of getting to hunt him, you wouldn't be showing sheds or telling every one else about it.
When Spider was found grazing along the road daily, that pretty much put a damper on keeping his secret.
 
I have a dumb question, so if say Tines up or any other guide would have taken this bull, say not a high dollar client, would this "conspiracey" be so thick, all you "internet biologist" be so fired up about this? sorry fellas I dont think so!

I agree bess. You are saying what everyone I talk to is thinking. Only on this site do people think he is legitimate. I have a friend that shot a 418 ranch bull in montana with his bow. Nine other hunters missed or blew stalks on him. He has killed more elk than anyone I know. He said that ranch bull was one of the hardest hunts. Its stupid saying a ranch bull would be easy to hunt or can be easily found.

I cannot agree with you on Spidey. First off, I would hate to think that anyone was low enough to try and pull off a World Record based on lies. Second, I think B&C is top notch and will defend their legitimacy, and I always believed in innocent until proven guilty. If B&C find anything fishy they will dig into it deep I am confident. Whether people like B&C or not, they are the standard by which trophy animals are judged. SCI accepts farm raised animals so I personally think they are a joke when we talk records, even though they do some good for all of us.

I think he looks farmy, but looking farm raised and actually being farm raised is two different things. If that bull is farm raised, and B&C found out, I think a whole lot of people will lose a ton of money. I cannot see it being worth it over one bull?

Just my opinion.

I do agree shooting Spideyjr as a spike is about the dumbest thing I have heard of.

I get hesitant to even suggest farm raised or transplanted because I do believe in B&C and what they are all about. To suggest a conspiracy puts a cloud of controversy on B&C who is probably one of our last long standing organizations with a clean bill of health. Someone said B&C is not their book, but they are mine. Anyone who wants a record recognized better go thru B&C or it won't mean chit in the end. I have been fortunate enough to have two B&C entries and I am very proud of that, as if they made SCI, it would be who cares for me.

I was just disagreeing with some of your opinions and observations. I still like ya bobcat and you are entitled to your opinion. We can disagree without planning a Throwdown at "The Expo!" Even though B&C is not required to do it, I wish they could put some solid evidence out there he is wild to put this all to rest.

This will always be debated cat, but I am going to stand by the B&C decisions. Just my opinion buddy!
 
Any bull could hide for six weeks from all you hunters down there... Its easy when you're herded into a horse trailer and taken to a private ranch until the BIG-MONEY hunter shows up, then you get lazy and wander back into that horse trailer which drives you back to the open country where you stumble out in front of a .300 Win. IMO the whole controversy driving this discussion is that many hunters out there, and on here, don't believe they have been presented with "all the facts..." Speculation is nothing more than a derivative of a lack of evidence and facts... Speculation is the funnest part of this thread...

I APPRECIATE VERY MUCH THE OUTDOORSMAN WHO QUESTION THINGS OF THIS NATURE, IT MAKES FOR VERY INTERESTING ENTERTAINMENT...
