Just curious if anyone has ever done it. It seems like you can bait almost every animal but mule deer. I've never heard of it being done. We spot and stalk them here in Nevada. We have too many streams to try hunting waterholes.

They seem to REALLY like APPLES!!! Check your States Game Reg's Probably NOT LEGAL!!! Good Luck

Alfalfa fields seem to work well. I know that there are a couple of ranches down in old Mexico that have large irrigated alfalfa fields and you should see some of the pictures. I looked at one pic down there a long time ago and it had a giant typical in it, I asked the mexican guy that had the pic what it scored and he told me in english that the buck "scored Two-oh-ten". What a PIG>

I know of a couple guides here in Washington that use alfalfa for bait. It works great for mulie and whities. It is legal in Wa. to bait deer and elk, but not bear, cats or coyotes. You have to put it out several days in advance, the longer the better. Check it every couple of days to make sure that there is enough for them to eat. All of the guys that I know that bait, use treestands to watch it.

Deer like Chestnut trees, so find an old farm or hunting cabin that may have planted them years ago and stalk it.

I know of a rancher in Texas near silverton that has corn flingers out that the muleys come in to. Just wouldnt be right to shoot a muley under a corn flinger..... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Baiting for deer should never be allowed. It is the lazy man's way of hunting and no ethical hunter would ever be a part of it. Sitting on a alfafa field is one thing, but putting out apples, please! By the way I feel the same way about all those texas ranches where they use feeders and you just sit in a stand and pick out the buck you want to shoot. I've talked to some guys from texas and they have told me that as soon as the deer hear the motor start up on the feeders they come running. Real sporting huh?

Nevada and too many streams? So far my Nevada scouting has been in areas where the only water sources have been guzzlers and a couple small springs.

It's easy to bait mule deer bucks:

"Hey, you've got weak front forks!"
"Whatsamatter, can't grow brow tines?"
"You're all spread and no mass!"
"Alfalfa belly!"
"Pencilneck!"

I usually bait my deer with a 30-06 autoloader and 180-gr. Nosler Ballistic Silvertips.

* Shot Placement
* Bullet Construction / Weight Matched to Game
* Choice of Caliber
