Where to hunt northern General rifle

I have hunted Deer in Northern Utah the past few years and only bagged one. Most years I don't even see a buck big enough to shoot. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of places worth hunting. I am kind of new at this. Are there any places less crowded with people that you might suggest. Please help!

Deer densities are fairly low on public lands, and hunting pressure is intense almost everywhere. The numbers of mature deer are very low, and after the early- snow winter range slaughter last fall, should be even lower this year. I think your best bet would be to focus on the more rugged or remote areas surrounding the more crowded areas on the opener, and move right into the popular areas during the week as they will empty out after the opening weekend. The key will be spending more time in the field and being in good country at first light, and staying until after dark. This means hiking in the dark, but I think it is your best bet at shooting a good deer in the northern region.

However, I don't know how much attention you want to pay to me because I have never shot a good buck in the Northern Region. In the four years I have hunted it I have shot two yearlings, and gone home empty twice. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-05 AT 06:03PM (MST)[p]This is a tough question to answer without giving away good spots. There are still some good bucks up in the North. They are tough to find.

Look for areas you would need to pack into. Try going in at least 4 miles and plan on spending a few days. Go to the tops of the peaks and look for some bucks out feeding. You will need a spotting scope and a tripod for sure.

Use the methods that Mike Eastman talks about in his book about hunting the high country.

There are about 1/4th as many bucks in the high country as there were in 95. But they are still there. Get high and hunt hard from an hour before the sun goes up to an hour after the sun goes down.

Look at the peaks East of Logan. And like I said, get away from the roads.

Or get access to private ground. Good luck!
