AZ or NV?

I know we've gone over this debate, but which do you think is worth building points in for elk, considering mule deer and sheep too (not too interested in antelope)? I don't want to shell out the license fee in both states every year. I'd like to have chances at drawing both elk and mule deer once every 5-8 years and sheep at best, once in my life. Which state do you think would work best for this plan?

you have more options for trophy mulies in Nevada but your chances to draw elk every so often are far better in Arizona

AZ has way more elk and tags. Unless you do early rifle bull only, you should draw sometime in AZ, not true in NV. Average bull harvested might be bigger in NV, but top end bulls should be close.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-09 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]Seems that the consensus is deer in NV and Elk in AZ which is what I was thinking as well from the research, reading, and talking I've done. I guess it just comes down to preference of elk or deer. I was hoping I could do one or the other and still come out okay....

Arizona has some good mule deer, its just if you want to hunt bulls Nevada is not a good option

Get rid a the wife and do both states. :)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-09 AT 11:08PM (MST)[p]I don't know where you live, but if you can get to Kingman AZ, you should consider taking Don Martin's Hunter Ed class. It only cost $5.00 (for the class) when I took it. I live about 6 hours away, so I paid for a night at a motel, but Don arranged for a discount at the motel for the people in the class. It gives you an additional permanent Arizona Bonus Point, and you come out of it really understanding how the AZ draw works and what your real odds are for deer, elk and sheep. There were hunters from all over the country, so for those who haven't hunted the Southwest, they came away with a better understanding of what to expect on an AZ hunt. I talked to Don after the class, and he suggested units for me to apply in that fit what I am looking for in the different hunts. The best part of the class is meeting Don, the other instructors, and the others that attended. It was a really interesting and fun day, and a weekend trip well spent. Below is a link to the information for the next class.

something else to remember... If you get an bull elk tag in Nevada (hopefully in this lifetime) you cant apply again for 10 years...if you draw and don't harvest a bull its 5 years.

My vote is AZ, in NV you are really far behind, NV squares bonus points AZ does not. Tons of NR elk apps in NV with 10 or more points, that gives them 100-200 names in the hat for your one, 5 years from now you will get 26 chances, but they will get 225-400ish, you get the picture.

I apply in a lot of states but skip NV (for the most part), maybe I will regret it and every year I debate it then look at crazy app numbers for NR elk, scary stuff. Got take of ma shooes to count dat high

I have drawn both, but my opinion is that IF you cannot put in for both, pick one because not one of us can predict which state will be best by the time you actually draw. Unless you a very lucky person, you are many years out on both states. I think the best advice was to get rid of the wife and put in for both!

Apply for deer in NV, $142 + $10 application fee. Apply for elk in AZ $151.50 + $595 tag fee for elk. Use the $232.50 you would pay for your AZ deer tag to pay for your NV license and application fee.

If money is an issue then you may want to consider "if" you ever draw a NV elk tag it is 1200$ right now, who knows what the price will be "when" you draw....
