In your opinion what is the best unit to hunt the late rifle elk season?? I'm thinking of cashing out my points this year.....

The San Juan, Pahvant, and Beaver are about as good as it gets.. also mt. Dutton if you want a rugged hunt

With that many points why not put in for a Muzzy hunt. I think you would be almost guaranteed a tag in any unit. Just a thought.

edgar,

great point! with that many points you can draw just about any hunt you want. i would rather hunt an early hunt than late! but some people would prefer a late hunt

With 15 points you can draw every late any-weapon tag, and all but Pahvant/San Juan/SW Desert early any-weapon tag. Within this year or next year you are ensured of drawing any any-weapon tag you want, I would apply for the tag you want and ride it out.

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

I concur. Unless you aren't going to be around after this year, do the early rifle on San Juan, Pahvant, etc. It might take a couple of years but you've put in the time, win the prize! (And take me with you!)

Oops guess that hunt is still around! Well with that many points I would definitly wait a few years for your dream tag!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-09 AT 07:45AM (MST)[p]If you just have to burn your points this year i would go with the ML--where the season dates fall this year, it is very similar to last year and it will be perfect for a rut hunt. Otherwise you have waited 15 years what's another year or to to hunt the early season with the rifle.

If you have to go on a late hunt, speaking from several years of experience and despite what others have said here....I WOULD NOT BURN 15 POINTS (or 12 for that matter) on a LATE SEASON elk hunt on the SAN JUAN PERIOD!!! SERIOUSLY!!!

utahelk1... I think you are well aware that you can draw a muzzy or late! But... with the dwr screwing the deer and elk hunters in utah left and right is there anybody out there that can answer your question! I went on a late hunt the first year it was out down south and it was great downed a true 350 on the first day! Now that a few yrs has gone by I have no idea!!!! Good Luck!!!!

Thanks for all your responses...It doesn't sound like a late hunt is the best. I'm not leaning toward a muzzleloader hunt either. I think I'll look at some premium tags and/or early San Juan..Pahvant..Beaver...Dutton and jump in huh? I hear the waters fine. I am worried about the effects of the spike hunts that will start this year....good luck to all!

Good luck with whatever you choose. I hope you draw and have a great experience.
