Fishlake or Stansbury?

Which would be the better hunt; Fishlake muzzy or Stansbury late? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For size, Fishlake hands down.

For ease of getting there if you live along the front Stansbury.

Fishlake has much better genes in the herd than the Oquirrhs. I would love to hunt fishlake muzzy. Especially the 09 season.

I've spent a large amount of time photographing, videoing and hanging out with several different herds on the Stansbury. Fish lake's quality is well above the bulls that call Stansbury home. Sure, there's an occasional 350-380 bull taken out there, but 300 is usually a decent bull on that unit, plus the genes are strange, small 3rds and 4ths and a lot of bulls with ski-wampus twists and turns in their browtines. I think they eat mine tailings and are exposed to radio active fallout.

with all the talk going on,it sounds like fishlake is going to take a lot of points this year

How could I not agree with my long lost BROTHER?? We need to figure out how that happened when I see DAD next time....LOL

You two keep it up.....
And I'll send you to your room with no dinner...

If you know the Stansbury very well, you may be better off hunting an area you know versus trying to learn a new one for a 7 day hunt. The Fishlake can produce, but it can be brutal and tough. Unless you have time to scout and learn the unit, think twice before making a gamble like that.
Look at how tough the hunt was this year and then make an educated decision from that. Remember that if you choose to burn your points, you are pretty much done with LE elk hunting.. Make it count..

No doubt, FLEH!! I'll bet he eats crab and stuff, too, while you and I eat convention food and cheap Utah beer!

We might have to ground him when he gets back. :)

These guys have no idea what they are talking about... Fishlake can produce. My buddy and I have hunted that unit for several years and have seen some nice bulls. My buddy drew a LE tag last year, hunted hard, saw lots of big bulls, the biggest easly over 400, biggest bull he has even seen! They are there and if your willing to get off your ass and hike, and I mean hike go fish lake!

monstermuleyman, So you seen a bunch of big bulls and one that was 400? How big of bull did your buddy get? I would guess closer to 300 than 400?

With all your hiking for a few weeks, how many 400" bulls did you see? And you too, FLEH, how many 400" bulls did you see on your hunt, or even ever as far as that goes up there?
I have only seen a total of 0 that would go that big on the FL. We've killed a few big bulls up there but I don't think I've seen anything that big either.

I'm also betting your buddy's bull was probably closer to 300.
There are some good bulls on the unit, but a 375+ bull is a real smoker on the Fishlake. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but that is pushin it..

Monster, perhaps you missed the huge amount of sarcasm in our posts....next time we should let you know we are joking for our own benefit.

Any one of our units can produce a 400 inch bull....

And yeah, in 28 days of hunting, I saw no 400 inch bulls, but I did see one that was a solid 380.

And he was standing on pavement at the time. :)

That being said, does Fishlake have that potential. YOU BET.

Do I absolutely regret not pulling the release on a 'pisscuttin' 320? MOST DEFINITELY.

I fully admit I got caught up in the gotta have a monster bull fever. Should have been damn thankful and taken what was presented to me on what often was a DAILY basis.

But then I would have missed out on the sheds, the fishing, the 11,000 foot 9 mile walk-til-my-feet-felt-like-stumps adventure, and oh yes, being oh so close to a 350.

That was really what it ended up being about, in the end.

Hey 'Dad', isn't it past your bedtime???

HAHAHA Looks like our "family" quarrels got somebody a little stirred up!!!

Monster....You need to learn about a little thing called SARCASAM!

Anyway...besides that...I have spent my WHOLE life on the Fishlake...And I have seen a total of 1 bull that would push the 400" mark and that was seeing him in August before any hunts started and then I never found him again! Just like Rick and Lisa have said...does it have the potential...YES!! But is is different that other units in Utah...better than some...worse than others...but it is a FUN unit to hunt!

And I also want to know what your buddy ended up killing?? I drew the tag in 07 Muzzy...and I know the unit quite well....and I ended up with one much closer to 300 than anything else...

To be serious though....it is a GREAT unit and you can have a great hunt....but if you are one of the UTARDS that think you have to have 375+ or NOTHING....then FISHLAKE is NOT the unit for you!!!

Predator and FLEH have pretty much summed up what I was saying. Our family has been pretty lucky up there, but LUCKY is the key word. I was in on killing 2 of the biggest 3 bulls I have ever seen up there. Killing two monster bulls with my daughter and wife who is handicapped, only shows that luck is part of hunting. I believe you can help create your "luck" but that is another story.
I did see a bull that may have been pushing the magic number 2 years ago, but like FLEH, it was before the hunts started.
If you decide to do the Fishlake, good luck. It will be an enjoyable hunt and there is some incredible scenery up there and any of my "family" would be happy to help you out.

Hey all,

I'm monster's friend who had the LE tag last year and I did not take a bull nor ever even fling an arrow at one. I hunted for 11 days (as much work as I could miss) and was within 50 yards of 320 or better bull everyday, with my closest being 28 yards from a mid-350's bull (tree branch was in the way). My first day out I could've stuck one (320 bull) at about 35 yards no problem, but other than that, I never had a clear shooting lane, the wind would switch right I was drawing back my bow, or just about any other scenario you can imagine that could screw you out of a shot. Things just didn't work out in the harvesting aspect, but it still an incredible hunt!

My dad started taking me to that area when I 4 (20 years ago) and he and his friends have been hunting it well before then. I know the area pretty well and always get into the elk, but it just wasn't my time I guess.

As for the monster I saw... He was 390ish for sure... I saw him the last morning of the archery hunt (I only had archery tag)and was in the process of trying to get a shot at a 360 bull I was hoping would work it's way towards me. He had a harem of about 30 cows with him. I had him at about 80 yards for 10 minutes straight, but I couldn't bing myself to take a shot like that and end up just wounding the big guy. Well, why I waiting and watching, another bugle sounded up the draw and out came this abosulte monster that made the jaws on both my dad and I drop to dirt. It was the biggest bull either had ever seen in person. He had only one cow with him. The 360 bull immediately started herding up his cows and rushing them into the pines. Once the 360 bull and his cows were up in the pines, the bruiser started moving in the same direction the herd had just gone, so I sprinted to try and head him off, but his lone cow spotted me and they changed their course. I spent all day chasing them in those thick pines, but to no avail.

I was also wondering as to where all you who are related are from? Locals I'd assume? Just curious cause I spent a few months living in Teasdale a few years back.

Oh and thought I might add that I did manage to stick a cow this year and another with my rifle on new year's eve up by Logan :)

FYI,
There is nobody on this thread that are related here...Just a private joke that got started when AWLB asked FLEH if he was bringing his dad up to the Expo. FLEH asked Jim if he knew his dad and he said he thought I was his dad...and then Lisa, who is a good friend who I tried to help on the Fishlake archery last year, and claims to be FLEH's sister, (LOL) put in her two bits and figured it they were brother and sister, and I was FLEH's dad, then she fit in also....
Just a little silliness going on but we are all good friends. FLEH and I both spend lots of time on the Fishlake and other surrounding units, and both of us have hunted the Fishlake for years..
Hope that clears this all up Shed!

lol, thanks for clearing that up for me antlerrick... I've been trying to get on this forum for awhile now and for some reason haven't able to so until now with the help of admin. Looking forward to some good banter between everyon on this site :)

Welcome to MM's. We look forward to hearing from you and your hunts. You just don't want to take too much serious on here though, as you've already seen. LOL....
When did you live in Teasdale? My cousin lived there for quite a few years...You may have known him...Mike Anderson?

lol, there's no worry about sarcasm... that's my second language!

I lived in Teasdale for 4 months over the summer of 05. I was working for the Forest Service in Loa and doing a bit of fishing and horn hunting (although pickins were slim for elk anyway). Name sounds familiar, but it's been awhile since I've been over that way now.

Oh and since you all were asking about a pick of my bull which I can't provide since I didn't get one, here is one my dad took in 05 down there:

He scored 328 7/8 by our measurements. Never seen the old man so happy.
