Hello All,I'm currenlty deployed to the horn of Africa with the US Marines. I've never hunted elk before but it's all i can think about. I am looking to plan a public over the counter trip to Colorado next year. Just looking for advice or some tips on where to look and what units to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome and huge THANK YOU from the homeland! I hope you stay safe. OTC elk in Colorado can be good. There are a lot of elk but generally get a lot of pressure. There are quite a few CO guys on here that are more than willing to steer you in the right direction.

It's always an adventure!!!

Like AWHOLELOTTABULL said PRESSURE is the key, don't know what corner of the state you are looking at but the biggest piece of advice(my opinion) is to find a OTC with lots of roadless areas. I mean at LEAST 7-8 miles to the next road, that way you can hike in 3+ miles to get away and be where there is limited pressure and have a considerably better chance at shooting a bull. I personally feel my odds of shooting a bull are better in archery than rifle season, due to getting away from hunters and having the bulls be in a active/vocal mood vs. being hold up tight, post rut in the deepest darkest timber knowing your every step and you not knowing they are there(usually) till they are on their way out.

So basically it boils down to if you hunt where others are either to lazy, scared etc... to go you will find an area that most likely holds the elk.

Best of luck and thanks for serving... for the Navy ;-)
