Need some help locating mule deer in this unit. I know there is alot of elk in the unit but the deer population is rather limited, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tough unit for deer. Too many hunters, not enough deer, poor buck to doe ratios, few areas to really glass.
Most of the unit is fairly thick, it's hard to sit water without being disturbed with the number of deer hunters in the hunt.
The Coconino rim in the north of the unit can be glassed but it is very difficult to get to deer once spotted.
It is a great campout however, so bring good steaks, campfire stories and an after dinner cocktail and you can have a good trip.
9 is really a much better elk unit than deer unit.

Neb is right, that is one tough unit to hunt for deer. I've hunted it twice & saw one spike in the two trips. I would think hunting lower in the p/j's would be your best bet. To bad you can't trade that deer tag in for an elk tag.

During my Rifle 9 elk hunt, saw a huge muley in the pinon junipers.....I would concentrate down there, and slow sneak through it....he was bedded down, 180-190 class... biggest muley i saw there...I also had a nice 4x4 pickup scoring roughly 165 in the same area...
that was below anita rd.

Thanks you guys!! There was two adult males and two kids one year sitting at a hole that they believed they owned. They said they took three deer and were waiting to shoot one more. They tried to run us off the water hole. We hunted nearby about 1/8 of a mile and saw 4does and possibly on buck as something crashed and took off soooo fast I couldnt make it out.. Anyhow, they didnt get there fourth deer but darn three is pretty darn good now that everyone says there are very little deer. If you guys had a tag where would you start????(road #,ridge or waterhole)

Try the Skinner Ridge area. This area has the highest densities of hunters, but it also has the highest densities of deer.

Have the same tag. Lots of rain and too many elk and too few deer. Seen a few on the east side. Nothing west.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-05 AT 06:38PM (MST)[p]There is a road headed to the east and I think its like 315 or something. Any ways there is water hole in about 2-3 miles. I had a friend who was helping his dad hunt and he spotted a nice 4x4 just west of the hole. Later that day his dad spotted a spike on the way back to camp. I only ran into a 6x7 bull just 150yds north of camp. Oh yeah and like 12 does but no bucks. I tried pretty hard too. What made you put in for that unit anyways cactus buck?

Blackknight, It's my backyard. I live here. I also have a bull tag this year.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-05 AT 09:39PM (MST)[p]Do you work for the phone company????Hey cactus buck where would you start for cow elk in dec and deer in oct.?????

Bk, For deer I would start around skinner ridge and work from there. Never hunted late cow(wife always gets early hunt)but try skinner or south of FR 347.
