09' Youth Hunt Question

My son is only going to be 12 this hunting season what are his chances of drawing a tag? And anyone willing to give info on a decent area would be appreciated.

Chances of drawing are dependent on how many put in. There's 270 resident early tags, and 13 late tags. So that should answer your first question. The next answer is: Depends on where your located.....there's elk on all the anybull units....I'd pick the one your most familiar with and go with it. Hunting pressure is hard on all of them during the open bull season.....the good thing for this youth hunt is they get to hunt without all the hunting pressure that you see during the general season. The early hunt is during the rut and can be a good hunt....the late hunt in my opinion is a bit harder, but bulls will be gathered in bachelor groups so if you find a group of bulls......just plan a stalk :) GOOD LUCK

If your son draws and you don't have a good spot. I guid on the youth hunt. last year we called in 6 six points and 5 five points. both kids last year had chances at 280 to 340 bulls. one killed around 280 5x6 and the other killed around 290 5x5. last year we killed around 300 6x6. I have pics of all if interested. good luck

North Slope would be my first consideration.

South Slope would be second.

They should be bugling and ruttin' pretty good.

I did this hunt with my son back in '06 as a NR. The NR odds were about 50% back then.

It was fun. We did it DIY and car camped.

My son (nonres) drew it 1st try last year. I talked to Resident guys who's kids had 3-4 points and were still waiting. I killed a 5x1 archery bull and my boy killed a 4x4 in about 1 hour. I scouted/hunted for 2 weeks before he got there and had it figured out. Wouldn't count on any huge bulls...just bulls.

I've been on two youth hunts with friends and family and they both have been a blast. I went on one on the south slope and the elk were not bugling and the other one we went up by smith and more house and they were bugling like crazy! I think you have about a 33% chance this year on the early and the late probably 15% chance. Get you a good cow call and find that dark timber and you should be able to have a curious rag horn come right in!!! The most inportant thing is too give that youngster a positive expierence and enjoy the outdoors!!!! Successful or not!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-09 AT 10:55PM (MST)[p]I got lucky in the 08 season i didn't have the youth tag but i am planning on applying for it this season. I would say the early season is the way to go because they are bugling, but also the late is good because if you get pounded with snow they are gonna be grouped up in the low county. I killed a 6x6 on the general bull hunt. Its a very hard time consuming hunt. It all depends on if your in the right place at the right time. Like i said its a time consuming hunt but its a awesome acomplishment. Good luck to you guys.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-09 AT 03:37PM (MST)[p]the way i read it in the proc. you cant get points on a youth hunt its just based on luck i guess.

Thats true about the points for the youth hunt here in Utah you can't accumulate pts. You only have a two year window to draw that tag thats why I asked. Thanks for all the input.

trophymuley..,

The hunt I took my son on was open to 12 to 17 year olds. The locals I spoke with said their children had 3 to 4 points. We all thought it was odd how an outastater could draw a once in a life time youth tag with no points and the local's kids had tried for several years. I'm not sure where you got the "no points and a two year window information."???, unless it is a different hunt or different state?

Took my son on it in 04. When I talked to the biologist, one of his son's never drew and the other one was 16 and had never drew. My son drew the second year. NR odds were 1 in 3, 33% back then. GREAT HUNT!!!

Its a strange rule. As long as a "youth" hunter turns 12 on or before the hunt, he or she can apply. However, they cannot apply for any of the LE Elk hunts (other than youth).

My understandin was youth did accumulate "youth only point". Thanks for the clarification.

My son drew this tag the only time I applied him for it. We had a very fun hunt up near Flaming Gorge. If we'd have known more about it, we'd have hunted longer. He had a blast and is now only a year or two away from drawing an LE tag, so we'll get to do it all over again, and soon.
