I've never really been on a decent muley hunt. I live in New Mexico and saw two enormous bucks a year ago and can't get those bruisers out of my mind. That particular unit doesn't have many deer and I never saw those two again. Anyway, just wondering which states I guy could apply in for a non-guided public land hunt. I'm not looking for record book animals or anything, but would like too see quite a few animals of decent quality. Also, specific units would be great. Just want a decent chance in a draw. Any weapon.

outtabreath,
Have you checked out the mule deer hunt report available here on MM? It costs $24.00, covers the best hunts in colorado. As you live in NM, and colorado is so close, thats what I would look at. lots of units that you could hunt every other year, or even every year with a bow. since the post you started on hunting elk by backpacking, you shouldn't have a problem getting into deer with your backround and committment level. hope that helps get you started. Scott

I'd recommend Colorado also. I've been driving up to Colorado from Albuquerque for a few years now. Non-resident tags are a little less than $300.

NMRAPTOR , I just moved to Rio Rancho in March . Is that an over the counter hunt or a draw unit , and hows the hunt quality as for hunters and deer #s'....I drew a bow tag for 38 but would like to be able to maybe go on another hunt.....Thanks ...NMHUNTNUTT

I hunted unit 27 2 years ago in arizona and we saw over 100 deer a day. Nothing real big but a couple decent ones. There are alot of little bucks too.
