That is a cool rack. I don't think I have seen one like that before. I would have to guess it is a stag but I don't know. It is certainly starting to look like those cactus bucks.

Very cool pic littlefoot

Great picture littlefoot--we got one on a trail came that has it as well but only up through the G3's.

When we got this picture a couple of years ago I did quite a bit of research on it. From what I was able to find, one of several things that are most likely causes of this deformation or a combination of more then one.
1--low levels of testosterone which maybe a result of a deformed or no testicles--we call the deer cactus buck. They typically don't shed their velvet ever and antlers just continue to grow like this one

2--they are lacking some sort of trace mineral in their diet usually copper/zinc
3--the have a parasitic worm called an arterial worm (but not likely in this case.

Cool pic, got any more?

I've never seen a bull elk like that before. It would have to be even more rare than deer. I've seen quite a few bucks like that on the pauns.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Unfortunately, if he is a stag, and I don't see any other way he could have velvet this time of year, he will never shed his antlers. FYI: a stag is basically a castrated male, either manmade or from injury.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-09 AT 08:43PM (MST)[p]We used to go to the refuge in Jackson hole every year to feed the elk and there was a bull out there that was like that full velvet middle of the winter, They called him the pillsbury bull the feeders that we talked to said he was just a real old bull that didnt rut anymore and never shed his velvet the figured that he was 13-15 years old and said he showed up on the refuge about 1 week before hunting season and didnt leave untill the snow was almost completely gone, He was a huge bodied bull We have some pics but they are on regular film if I get a chance I will scan them and post pictures, this has been 5-6 years ago. Im sure more people on here have seen him as well.
They also said he shed his antlers every year he just didnt rub off the velvet, But after looking at this bull again he does kind of look like a catus bull.

Very Cool! I do not think I have ever seen an Elk like that!! Thanks!

Very cool pics Littlefoot, Ya don't see that everyday. I hope to see you holding his sheds in a month or two..........

he sure would be a great bull to get in the archery season or any season. I don't think he will shed his horns, but hopefully you can keep tabs on him and let us know.
