Colorado unit 76 first rifle

My wife has 10 points in Colorado and has never elk hunted - she absolutely loves to deer hunt, and has wanted to elk hunt since we met 10 years ago - I would like to show her atleast one really good,"classical elk hunt", I have been looking at this unit for some time now, and though I would prefer the muzzleloader hunt, she is still several years out - maybe more. But we should have enough to draw the first rifle season. I was told the muzzleloader season was much better because of the consistency of the weather. Before we decide what to do for certain in 2009 I would really like some advice - 10 points is a lot to use for a less than great hunt. Also if someone could suggest another limited hunt in the state that she could draw that would be great, I would appreciated it. To qualify as great for her has nothing to do with trophy quality, rather very low competition, abundant bugling and lots of elk. Thanks for any advice.

Todd,
I would say that you picked a great unit. With only 21 bull tags in that first season and some cow hunters you shouldn't have to much competition. That is such a big unit also. Get up high and find her a big one. You and your wife should have fun. You will have plenty of bugling and see lots of elk. My uncle hunted it 2 seasons ago. We got in 2 days before season started and found some great bulls and the night before season my uncle got altitude sickness and we had to pack him out and to the hospital. It sucked he never got to hunt it. You should have a great time!

ToddT,

I've been hunting 76 before and after it went limited in 1984. If you are a nonresiedent 10 points will not qarrantee you a draw in first rifle, second and third would draw if there are not a lot that decide to cash in with bigger points. Muzzleloader with 10 points no chance. Give me a call if you want to talk elk hunting 719-588-3386

Correction there are 61 tags in the first rifle. Budrow is right last year people with 10 points had a 91.83% chance at getting the tag. There are where 79 people sitting at 9 points that put in for the tag. Plus the 8% that didn't draw with 10 last year. And it seems like every year people with 12 or more points will put in for the tag. It may be tough to get the tag with 10 points but i would sure try.

I'm also on of the 10 point NR guys ,I see there is a lot of roadless area in the unit, do you have to get back in there to find decent hunting or is access a big problem? Southern Colorado is a long ways to drag stock and back country camp gear, I'd like to be able to do day hunts from a road if possible. no I don't mean road hunt I mean in and out before dark.
