New Mexico vouchers

I want to hunt New Mexico but after looking at the draw odds, they aren't very good, even for mediocre units. All I want is just a good hunt, good numbers of elk but they don't have to be big. I'd be happy chasing around 280 bulls. What do vouchers run for a unit like this? Also, am I right in saying that you have to purchase the tag ontop of the voucher price?

Thanks

I'm in Oregon, if anyone wants or needs info I'd be happy to help you out.

yes you have the tag fee on top of the voucher which can run from 1000-4000-Hatrick

You can get a list from fish and game that has all the landowners that got vouchers

From what others have said I assume you mean Landowner Tag when you say voucher. There are many people with landowner tags in NM. The NMGF has yet to release the list for Landowner permits for this coming hunt year (2009-2010), but should be out soon.
I don't look at non-res stats, but w/17% tags assigned to non-res
hunters, I wouldn't think it hard to draw a tag.
My hunt buddy Mozey and I have drawn a tag every year for 6 or 7 years in a row. NM residence say we must know someone in the NMDGF.
WRONG. You need to be smart about which hunts to apply for. Sometimes we get our third choice.
Some Units have more elk than others, but they all have elk. The key is scouting out where the elk are in the unit you draw, then work hard to bag one.
I sometimes get a landowner tag for 6A, but that's getting harder to draw too.
Good luck

bigbull48.... it's 22% go to nonresidents(10% unguided, 12% guided) and Landowner tags are purchased, not drawn. but you are right on about the importance of putting time in to find elk in those units which have a reasonable chance to draw.

roado..
I'll believe you on the non-resident percentages,
But you must believe me, I am a small land owner in 6A and there are so many landowners applying for tags, it is a draw now for the small holding landowners to get landowner permits in 6A. (I don't know about any other Unit) I used to get a l.o. tag each year, but lucky to get one now every other year.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-09 AT 09:24PM (MST)[p]You guys are getting your wires crossed.

I think Roado was referring to the end user of the Tag rather than an SCR land owner. SCR "Lucky list" will be out mid March.

correct wapitibob.... i thought we were referring to the general draw, my bad. i have no idea of the percentages of landowners in the scr pool that actually draw a voucher from the state.
i hate this time of year, no hunts, a ways away from draw results(except wyoming), no shed hunting yet. getting my bonus points(with the wife) accumulated though.
