Deer calls

Has any one had success using deer calls on Mule Deer (sepcifical in New Mexico)? And are there any good videos on Mule deer calling?

I've seen that video and it is impressive. I see that it is an old Gordon Eastman video. If the call works so well why don't they use it in recent videos. I've used the call myself and am not quite sold. I've seen it work like a charm and I've seen it scare the hell out of deer. Of course, that could be my lousy technique too.

I've had wonderful success using an old cow wall. It looks like a credit card folded over, with a black rubber band. I just loosened the band to lower the pitch of the sound. There have been times when the mule deer have just come running to me, even when I am standing out in the open.

My buddy used the Gordon Eastman fawn distress call once when he jumped a bunch of deer in the thick timber. He heard crashing coming his way and he was thinking a big ol' buck was heading his way. To his surprise a monster cougar can out leaping towards him. Needless to say, he doesn't use the call much anymore.

I used to use grunt tubes while hunting the late season. The ones I tried were reed based and I found the reeds froze up on me way too often. I then watched an old Shockey whitetail video and he said not to waste your money on grunt tubes, best to just swallow air and BURP. It's free and it will never fail ya. It can give ya heart burn something feirce after a long day of doing it, but nothing some Tums can't fix. I burp all the time during the late season. Works like a hot damn. Especially when combined with a rubbing antler as I beat brush.

If the call your talking about on the Eastman video is the call by E.L.K than it is the same one that I have had and just bought another one last night at the new Sportsmans in Mesa. I have used it several times and had does come flying in. I'm not sure if it would work on a buck but I can say it works on the does. So maybe during the rut you could get some does to come in and bring a buck in behind them. I don't know for sure. I would use it more to stop a buck for a shot than to try calling them in.

I hunt in AZ and use the deer stopper. And it works if im in a stock and brake a twig i just sit tight for a second give it a soft blow every things back to normal.made by EASTMANS OUTDOORS
