Colorado unit 49

Myself and three other buddies have 6 non resident points for Colorado and after some research have decided to go for it this year. It seems that in Colorado, you either need a ton of points or hardly any, and we seem to be in "no mans land". Am I correct on this? It looks like we could draw unit 49. I was wondering if anyone had any advice either about unit 49 or if theres a better unit with 6 points. We've all 4 hunted elk our whole lives and are in pretty fair shape. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the good info. I was wondering if you could pack horses in to get away from some people? If so we would have to hire someone, but if it would be worth it we would look in to it. Did you see a fair amount of elk both years? We would all love 300 plus bulls but would all be happy with 270 plus bulls. We're just looking to get in to a bunch of elk and hopefully bring a couple home!

We saw alot of elk in 2007 but very few in 2008 in the same areas that we hunted in 07. It was about the same temps. both years so I don't know what caused the difference. It was an extremely tough hunt in 08 and we hunted the whole season. They were bugling a little in 07 and never heard a single bugle in 08. Very dramatic difference in the 2 years.

I corresponded with Baker from Houston who hunted 49 last year. Had a great hunt. Stayed in Leadville, hired an outfitter with horses to get him around the mntn. each day. The rut was late this year, 1st rifle the elk were still bugling. He said it was a great hunt. Good luck.
