New Mexico terrain and vegetation

I want to apply for NM archery elk next year and am doing research now. I want to hunt areas that have big timber, aspens, green vegetation. Not areas that are dry, open, desert areas. I can't tell what kind of vegetation or habitat exists in certain areas just by looking at a map. Is there a resource for this like unit descriptions like Nevada does? Or can anyone give me some ideas?

Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-09 AT 10:39PM (MST)[p]Figure anything above 9000 ft will be aspen, fir, spruce, and many places at 8000-9000 ft can have tall ponderosa pine forest. 7000-8000 is typically pinon-juniper, below 7000 getting into desert. These are rough numbers off the top of my head. Most of the northern units (52 mentioned above) will have some high country, but there is also some high country down south, 36 goes up to around 11000, I think.

I guided for Frank Simms then for he and George when the business became USO. East, South East side of Brazos peak. East side of Chama Land and Cattle property.
