Wife drew unit 58 WY. Was not planning on that.

Was planning on putting in for points only, but, decided to put in for the toughest unit instead.

Well my wife drew it. In one way we are excited in the other way this is a tough year economically to hunt out of state.

My wife already has a 362" bull under her belt and our hope is to get something over 330" on this hunt.

Question?? Is a guide necessary on this hunt?

Is there advantage to paying trespass fees on private land?

I have lots of elk hunting under my belt so I would only need a guide if it is a matter of getting access or learning an area that is very tough to learn.

We will have limited time. Last year I was hunting or scouting every weekend from Aug through end of year here in NM (though my wife and I did have a WY antelope hunt). I hunt with family and friends so will not have a ton of time.

Appreciate any input from anyone on unit 58. I always try to be helpful with anyone hunting in SE NM or other areas I have hunted.

Thanks

I don't know a damn thing about 58 EXCEPT Huntin Fool in their comments said that there is additional pressure from the Govenor tag holders. Then I looked @ the draw odds and realized it was a primo unit. Guess some guys will pay $20,000.00 for this tag and some will try to squeeze in a long weekend. Oh well.

Don't know why you applied if you didn't want the tag. You could PP it in June. But since you have it, you should treat it like a 16A tag.

Not a case of not wanting it. The whole reason I apply in 10 states is to go on quality hunts.
Its just that this year lets just say that I am less excited that my wife drew than if it was another year.
We were on some kind of hunt almost every weekend last year in NM during the fall.
I will research it and we will give it the work it deserves just like I have always done in the past.

Congrats on a great tag. I have put in for tags that maybe I wasn't 100% prepared to draw but with my luck I never draw anyway! You and your wife should have a tremendous hunt. There is a decent amount of private land that hinders access to public behind it. If you're good with a map and can walk a ways you should be OK. If it were me I might pay somebody a few bucks to help you out. You'll wait a long time to draw that tag again. There is some pressure there as a long of the commissioners tag hunters end up in that unit. Great country to hunt.

58 is a great area if you have horses. If not, plan on walking up hill, both ways. No shortage of bears either...

Way to Go NM Paul! You are living right, have incredibe luck, or both! Back to back VC tags and now a great tag in WY! I can only wish to have your luck one day......

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-09 AT 10:10PM (MST)[p]Awesome job Paul.

How much to have you put in all my apps next year???

I will ask around and see if I can find someone with info for you.

Bob, we have max points in WY so we had as good a chance as anyone though we only put in for the regular tag not the special.

The rest of the year putting in for pref points only if that is the option or toughest to draw. We hope this is our only out of state hunt.
Last year we were very busy in NM as you know.

Someone had sent me a link to a Carter Mountain map that showed the HooDoo Ranch. Does anyone have that link or a contact number to the Hoo Doo Ranch and can PM it to me or any other private land that would give access or charge a trespass fee.
Thanks

I hunted 58 twice.
Both early & late.
Need big snow to push the big bulls from the park.
There are good resident bulls too.
My buddy killed a 358" bull there.
I hunted around Needle mtn.
About 13,000 feet and nasty.

Needle Mountain is way up the South Fork. It is actually in area 59.

The big guys are there year round. Sure, more come in after the snow comes. You just have to hunt harder early, but they are there.

Private land is not an issue with the Hoo Doo and their hunter management program. They do not allow bow hunting. There's other ways around that though.

Wanted to thank everyone for the input.

We decided that this was a hunt that we do not need a guide.

Will try to go first part of season, and if cant make it happen will go back for late season hunt.

Paul, I apologize for my original post, kinda rude.

I'm in 7 states every year, for 2-6 species and I guess that could happen to me too. And for my fiance and her son too. And still in Co, Or and Nv for my son whose starting basic training this week. Pretty expensive.

When I applied for utah, we each put in for 6 species and not the same hunt for any of them. Nevada will be the same minus moose.

Long shot but I hope I'm in your position this May/June and when I post about some tag I can't really put the effort into that I'd like, feel free to critize me. :)

No harm, no foul. I also apply in 10 states though this year will not be applying in ID so 9.
I have been building points so I feel like a hamster on a habitrail that if i get off it was all a waste of money.

I guess in the back of my mind i was willing to go on one out of state hunt this year so I applied for all of us for the hardest to draw unit in WY not thinking we would draw.

Now I will put in for points only if that is an option in the rest of the states.

Last year we hunted our Azzes off in NM. We had some kind of hunt going every weekend. It was awesome. I moved here from CA almost 5 years ago and to me it is a paradise. I put my kids in, the neighbors kids friends and family and then I take them hunting. I had 3 tags last year but was lucky enough to be involved in 9 different elk hunts, 6 deer hunts, 3 antelope, 3 oryx, and a couple of wild pigs.

I know how hard it is to draw a tag like this, so trust me, it will get hunted hard. Thankfully it is a long season and we will drive out there twice if it comes to that.

Good Luck!!!! On all your hunts.

BTW, I was just looking @ property in NM and CO on-line yesterday. You might be getting a new neighbor in 5-6 years.
