My brother and his buddy were out shed hunting and came upon 25 dead cows, yearlings, and spike elk at the bottom of a cliff. This area is infested with wolves and that is our only explanation. Just another reason for me to hate them even more. Any of you ever seen anything like this? They did get pics and video. Maybe I can get them on here for all you to see soon.

Actually, I did wonder that too. It's just more fun to blame the wolves. No seriously, I would think that if they were flying there they would understand the issue with the cliffs and kind of "lay off" the elk a ways. Who knows though.

25 dead elk all close together doesnt sound like the work of wolves. The wolf has done a lot of bad but that just doesnt sound like his work to me.

Maybe they were being chased by lemmings!

Wolves will chase the elk wherever they will go, they may not have intended to push them off the cliff, but then again, they may. Did you see any wolf sign amongnst the bodies of the elk?

I was thinking that maybe it was very cloudy (low clouds), which happens a lot up there or maybe a storm. Then the wolves came and the elk ran. They might not have been able to see real well.

And yes, there was wolf sign. There always is up there though. Any day of the week.

for wolves to have killed all those elk, they all must have been weak and diseased. everybody knows they wont kill healthy elk. :)

Exactly. I'm sure some will say, "Well they weren't actually killed by the wolves." Well, no, but if there weren't any of the worthless bastages around there would be at least 25 more elk living not counting the ones that were un-born and died.

Of course we don't know for sure the wolves did it, but this is one of the areas in WY that there are a lot of wolves killed by the government and we just don't hear about it much. Every year they are called in by the ranchers here in this spot to control the wolves because of the hell they raise with their cattle. This is the same area since the introduction of wolves, more specifiacally the last 5 years or so that their population has really risen, the G&F has reduced late season cow tags by HUNDREDS. They used to give out over a 1000 and now it's down to a few hundred.

Seen it happen in Rock Springs or Green River Wyoming(can't remember which town) about 20 years ago with a herd of Antelope. As best they could figure the whole herd walked off the cliff one after the other. They said there had been alot of thick fog about the same time it happened. They checked the tracks at the top of the cliff and figured that they had been walking and not running. There were about 50+ antelope in the pile at the bottom of the cliff. Some lived a short time after and crawled about 10-20 yards and died. That is the story I heard from a local there. I did actually go up and see the animals, it was pretty bad!

You'd be hard pressed to get the government to count the "Un-Born" that were killed, after all, Abortion is still legal in this country... As long as we never get to vote on it...

This sounds like a freak incident to me... I always thought wolves liked to separate a heard and narrow it down to one or two animals to chase. It doesn't sound too far a stretch to blame wolves though, WHEN DO WE GET TO START KILLING THEM???

I aooreciate the government in a helicopter theory as well, having seen this first hand here in Utah, it could very well have happened...

....jeez some of you are dense...he never said the wolves killed them all with their teeth but certainly could have paniced them over the cliff.....coulda been something else too...but the point was never that the wolves "directly" killed them all.

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

I'd a thought that iffen wolves were chasing elk, elk fell offa cliff, the wolves would go around the cliff and eat dinner!!!

Said there was wolf sign, were any of the elk eaten on????

Hate to be the naysayer here, but can you get those photos posted? Having a hard time getting my mind wrapped around 25 dead elk at the bottom of a cliff.

Yes, I am trying to get them. I myself haven't gotten to see them yet either. I know they were taken to the G&F already. Won't do any good though. As soon as I get some pics emailed to me I will put them on here.
