There is acually a minimum bid in which has to be meet in order to sell the tag!! The Banquet holders usually forget to tell anyone that, so basicly if anyone thinks they are going to go to a banquet and get some steal of a deal.....Think again!
Truthfully I can't figure out how Ducks Unlimited even ended up with an elk tag to auction off, you can be sure it probably wont happen again.

Second of all, if I bid $9200 and did not get the tag I would be pissed off. Who set the reserve? DU? It sure as hell was not the DWR? Never heard of such a thing? Is the bidding at or below the reserve just for fun and something to take up time? I would be willing to bet if they were taken to task on this $9200 would get the tag.

KTC good one, there are many orgs that have tags, that would surprise you. With 562 of them outside of the draw not too shocking one goes for liver restoration.
They announced in advance that there was a reserve, but would not budge off of that reserve.
The guys doing the bidding seemed a little miffed by the whole thing.

The same thing happened at a DU banquet in Wasatch County a few weeks ago. I'd imagine that it's the same tag. Maybe they'll sell it at the next banquet...

Maybe someone who's familiar with the auction tag bid process could briefly explain it here. There's some fancy formula for how you are allotted one of these tags and it's based on the ratio you offer back to the DWR from the proceeds and probably has a minimum as well.
Many organizations who are outside of big game hunting use these tags to draw folks to their banquets. In order to get the tags they have to offer more money to the DWR as a percentage of the proceeds from the auction. It's simply another marketing tool and a way for the orgs that don't have such high priced permits help raise money for the DWR and for their own purposes.

I was at aa NRA dinner the other night. They were auctioning off a 5 animal plains game safari in Africa. Could'nt get more than $2300 and they pulled it. Somebody went up there later and asked the reserve then offered to pay it....$2500!!!!! They announced they had a bid for $2500 and no one else spoke up....helluva deal. They also sold a fishing trip to alaska for salmon and halibut.....5 day all inclusive for $850!!!! Both deals all inclusive, only had to pay airfare and getting your meat/trophies home. Man!!!! Tuff time are here!

I kinda wonder where the tags are so much cheaper than previous years, if it is the economy, or the quality is declining and the tags are just not worth what they once were? I dont know either way, but surely many people still have lots of money. Doctors, lawyers, commercial construction company owners, and so forth are not hurting any. There is still money out there.

In order to get into the tag program DU had to promise to get a certain amount of money for the tag. This price is set off the amount of money that the tag has brought in before.
If they don't sell it then they will lose that tag and others in the future.
DU rushed into the tag program and it is showing now.

Should NWTF give up all their tags?
I don't mind a duck group getting tags, but I do mind a group pulling them like this. You won't see the other groups pull tags. I will be surprised if DU gets even one tag for 2010. If I was the highest bidder for that tag I would have my lawyer filing a lawsuit yesterday!

It was at the Zanavoo Lodge in Logan Canyon. Anyway, a guy bids on a Tag; I believe it was the Book Cliffs or Pauns.
This guy gets the high bid, they say its his, and move on...
Anyway, a few moments later, he is told that he did not meet the reserve. To make a long story short, they took it back.
So it does happen. They should say there is a reserve before the bidding starts, and say what the reserve is. Otherwise, it
should go to the high bidder.

I want my money back now! Aint no way in heck I'll be caught dead in that thing! Picture this, bart (guy is the size of a small gorilla) driving a tiny little clown car. Me at 6'4" weighing 275 lbs and not too fat crammed into the same clown car and wearing an xtra small boy band shirt with my belly button hanging out. Bart will be eyeing me the entire trip. The only thing stealthy about that car is the fact that people pull up to talk and quickly drive away not wanting to see too much of what they think is going on. Only benefit to that is no game warden in his right mind will check my tag if we go huntin like that so I guess in a sense that setup gives us a governors tag.

Remember stinky, slammy got his big old fancy truck stuck, my 'clown car' made it everywhere we needed to go. Are you about looks or results? You and slammy can get all dolled up and head into town after you put a stinky on the ground and feed your egos cruisin main in Richfield in your 'truck'. I'll be busy polishing the 'clown car' for the next adventure!
