I'm a non-resident currently with 16 points "before" the 2009 app deadline. My question is...how many points will it take for me to draw the early rifle season in CO GMU #201? I'm very interested in your calculated guesses.

I have my guess that I will share later.

Straight odds based on last year's tag and application numbers says that you will draw in either 20 or 21 more years. There will obviously be some attrition as people drop out of the draw or choose easier to draw units. If point banking is re-instituted (let's hope it is not), then a few people will go that route. Then you most factor in the people that apply for points only and do not show up in the draw odds. They could increase the number of years it takes you to draw, if they jump into the 201 pool.

I'd say that you should expect it to take another 15 years or so in the current system. I don't think the current system will be around that long, though.

Griz,
I had the same number of points as you have. The answer to my 201 question was, "Not in my lifetime". I cashed in my points last year on area 61. I think Colorado elk points are some of the most over-hyped things in western hunting.

Dwalton,

My question for you is are you glad you cashed them in? Did you punch your tag and if so, how was he?

Looking at last year's drawing there were 41 people ahead of you in area 201 (17+ points). Add another 149 people with 17 or more points that went the PP route. Finally kick in another 294 people that are in the 16 point catergory, and you can see how I came to the conclusion to cash in my points.

As for my hunt, yes, I'm glad I cashed them in. Area 61 is a neat place to hunt. As far as the bull quality, it is also over-hyped. There were 7 hunters in camp. All took 6 point bulls. They ranged in size from 250-300.

I killed my bull on the 4th day of the 1rst rifle season. He was around 275 points. My buddy's bull was 285. I think if you see a 300+ bull in 61, you should shoot him.

That said, the hunt was great. Very few people and lots of animals. I'd do it again, but I don't have 2,000 years to wait to build up enough points to draw the area.

My calculations were a bit off. You can expect to wait at least 15 years, but it could also take you more than a lifetime. The real question is, will the CDOW force people to make the tough decision, or will they give them and "out"?

I was like you and with the pref point creep I figured I would draw when I reached the age of 92 or 93.
That would havebeen O.K. but I have another hunt planned for that year.

Well, unfortunately (for me) you all confirmed my suspicions. I figure, (with deaths, attrition, and people just not wanting to wait any longer) that it'll take me 15-17 years to draw GMU 201.

Does that suck or what?

Now what to do is the only question left.

Rem308, Ha Ha Ha !!!!!!!!!!!

Almost wet myself.

Grizz, I went the same way with 61 last year. Great hunt and a lil better bulls than Dwalt experenced BUT I had a bow in my hand. Worth 13 years wait?? Not really sure but I was doing other things during those 13 years, not just waiting on Colorado.
No regrets!! In fact, I've been checking regularly on 61 archery LO vouchers. Not worth the $5,000.00 they are asking but for $3,500.00???? It would be hard to resist.

Where would I find info on these LO vouchers?
