Dri Ice and elk.

As long as you keep it cold, replacing the ice as you head home should be good for 2-3 days.....I know I have done that in the past.

Two years ago Eelgrass deboned his Antelope and put it in ICE Chest and with Ice and later Dry Ice I believe and he had three days to go to drive home because he drives slow like his turtles.
Sorry Eel, just had to add that jab at yea....LOL

I plan on a Cow elk muzzleloader hunt and then stopping for a 2 day antelope hunt in Wyoming before heading back to Michigan.
I have taken a small freezer and generator in the past, but thinking of hauling my camper out this year and will not have room for the freezer.Wanting to try the dri ice and a 150 quart cooler.

If you replentish the dry ice and keep it cold, I think that you would be good for 5-6 days, at least. I normally don't cut up my meat until its been aged for that long anyways. I think that you'll be fine.

HEY GUYS......BE CAREFUL WITH DRY ICE. IF DRY ICE IS PLACED INSIDE OF CONFINED SPACES LIKE A CAMPER, OR A SHELL OF A TRUCK....DONT FALL ASLEEP. DRY ICE PRODUCES CARBON DIOXIDE WHICH DISPLACES OXYGEN......YOU COULD ASPHYIATE (SP) YOURSELF. I,M AWARE OF 3-4 OF THESE CASES...............YD.

Have kept elk etc on dry ice de-boned for up to 5 days. Came home and cut up with no problems. I guess I'm still alive so, That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I put a piece of cardboard [or equal] between the meat and the dry ice to keep from burning.

I've had one of those 5 day coolers keep chunks of dry ice for a few days.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-09 AT 00:34AM (MST)[p]Thanks for the heads up YDand Flatlandr. I had never heard of that before. I've never slept in closed quarters with dry ice, but now I know not to. Thanks!

I have got an EEGLOO 6 Day cooler '150 quart. Sounds like I should be good to go.
Thanks.

I used dry ice to keep fresh meat cold on the drive back to OH from Wyoming and it froze it rock solid. 2 day trip. If you get too much and your meat is not cut/pack ready for the freezer, you may have to thaw it. Be careful.

If you can configure it a freezer/generator is the way to go. I'm from Michigan also and have done the WY/CO/NM/MT to Mi trip several times with the freezer/generator combo and it is the way to go. Dry ice is expensive and a pain.

If you want to freeze meat or keep it frozen put the dry ice on top of the meat.If you want the meat to remain unfrozen put the dry ice on the bottom. As long as you replenish the dry ice to keep the meat at 32 to 40 degrees it should be OK for a week or more.

Dry ice is usually about $1.00 per lb. In the West many Walmart stores have it, in the East virtually no one has it.

This is just a guess but a 150 quart cooler with 150 lbs of elk meat may require 10 pounds of dry ice and need to replenish it every two days.

I have used dry ice before under a little different circumstances each time. I put 4 lb in a 50 quart cooler and took it on an airplane once. The 50 lbs of meat was frozen at the beginning and it was still frozen 12 hours later but the dry ice was gone. On another trip I put 10 lbs in with 150 lbs of unfrozen meat and when I got home 1 1/2 days later the meat was still cool but the dry ice was gone and it hadn't frozen any of it.

It's difficult to tell how much you will need. The 10 lbs every two days may not be enough.

I always do a dry ice, regular ice combo. Wrap the dry ice in a blacktrash bag and put it under the regular ice. I've never had the meat freeze. Basically it just keeps the regular ice froze keeping the meat cool.

I picked up a cut, wrapped, unfrozen deer one year. Packed dry ice under it and drove 30 hours, the bottom layer was frozen BUT

Why not hang it in a meat locker??? Last year I killed my bull 9/23, got it to the meat locker late on the 24th after 70 heat during the day. Hung in Co meat locker for 5+ days, loaded it up wrapped in an insulated horse blanket for 1.5 days. Hung in Wy meat locker for 4 more days. Wrapped in horse blankets along with 4 antelope for 1.5 days home. Meats fine.

I love the freezer/generator idea but by myself I'd never have enough room. i saw guys driving around in Wy last year with freezers in the back of their rigs. Great Idea!!! Plug in @ night and load meat in by day. :)
