Well, So far this year I have had a real dissapointment with the quality of animals that I have been seeing during my hunting trips. I understand what happened opening week for me with the full moon out and the water situation being so different then the years before the deer were just spread to the moon. But time is running out and it has been too many years since I shot a mule deer with my bow. So, If you have dibs on me to even compete in the big buck contest it isn't looking very good, I am going back to monroe for 1 more week, and if I don't find anything worthwhile, then I am not gonna be dissapointed. I honestly just want Venison this year, I have a whitetail hunt scheduled for next year and am in the process of setting up a Caribou / Antelope hunt with a good buddy of mine and my dads, Greg Ray. Critisize all you want, I just want some meat!!!!

You don't eat the horns anyway. Have a good time. Don't forget a camera, you can't expect the californians to have one in their tool box for you. Can't wait to hear the story, and see some pics. Good luck Cass.

I killed a pronghorn Antelope and a Alaskan Caribou the same week in '97 ... took me weeks to get over the jetlag.

Unfortunatly for the Monroe, due to the conditions it was nothing short of a slaughterfest last year on the rifle hunt and this particualar herd is going to need some time to re-coup.
However, on the last day of the hunt last year I cut a good track and took off on a hike that ended up in about three feet of snow and I was able to harvest a nice 6x4, I'm just hoping that several others stayed up in the snow as well, I usually hunt the Muzzleloader hunt up there, but not this year. I'll be heading up there this weekend and will be surprised if I see anything. Good luck Cass.

Everyone I've talked to says that the Monroe has never seen the amount of people that have been up there this season.
BFE jr. was up there last night & reported that the crowds are starting to thin out. Sent you a PM.

Cass-

Don't give up hope. The "Powers that Be" say that Utah's deer herds are in the best shape they've been in years and years. :) It's gonna be a banner year for sure on all of Utah's general publicland units!;) Especially the Cache County area, the Northeastern, and the Grouse Creeks. It sounds like Monroe is going to produce a few too, just got to find them.

Cass, since my last post, I spoke with the sheep herder that works out were you were hunting, & he says that starting tomorrow they are going to try to burn anything that will start, between Tibador & Dry-lake, on down to Dry-canyon.
Hope this helps.

Cass,

Is that a caribou/antelope combo ?????? I hear those arctic pronghorns are a tough hunt, similar to the elusive desert caribou.

No, Greg is setting up a New Mexico Antelope hunt and an Alaskan Caribou hunt.
B_F_E I read the sign while I was up there, That was supposed to be burned back in July, I guess they are starting a little later then expected. Thanks for the info, I'm contemplating doing a backpacking trip to see what I can get into for the first 3 days I'm up there again. I mean I know the animals are up there, I ran into bull elk left and right my first week up there.
Thanks guys, You know me, I never give up ;)

It's a tuff way to look at things but the last day is just as good as the 1st day.. as for monroe spent a weeknd down there and seen nothing with any size lots o little ones down below barny lake..

archery hunting has you shaking your head more than any sport i have ever been in.. stay positive look at the next day with you goals to be reached..I have only played the archery game for 5 years and have killed 5 of my best bucks doing so, they don't come easy, as for this year i have now passed on 5 4x4's that wasn't bigger than last years so I'll keep hunting...some nights i wonder if the decision was right to pass or not but it means I get to keep hunting so/// Good luck cass
