Moss Springs Outfitter

Has anyone heard about or have any info about Moss Springs Outfitters in Oregon? I would like to find some referances and ask them about there hunt(s).

I don't know much about them other than a recent dialogue with one of their guys at the Oregon Sportsman Expo. I talked to quite a few outfitters who, most of which, were very genuine and laidback real people. As I was leaving, we walked past the moss springs booth and this young guy tries to rope me in. He talked to me like I was an idiot. Like, you ever hunt elk before? I said ya, every year and I do ok. He says, well how would like to shoot one of these 350 type bulls or 180 type muleys. I just let him talk and talk. The guy was obnoxious and somewhat offensive, about the same as a bad used car salesman.

Anyway, that right there turned me off from them all together. There are other outfitters up in that area that are well known and reputable. I hear Del Sol is a good couple of guys. I'm not sure but I think Barry Cox, the guy that did all of Cameron Hanes packing is with them.

Another, although I don't know anything about, is Mark Moncrief of Tri-state outfitters. That guy has pulled more trophies out of that country than anyone I would suspect. But again I know nothing of his outfit other than quality animals.

If you are looking for a drop camp I think Barry Cox would do a good job for you. I think the most of the outfitters in the eagle cap would be fine for a drop camp. A guided hunt would likely be another story. The country is extremely steep and IMO it would be tough country to guide in except for archery elk. If that is what you are going after I would talk to the potential guide and chech references etc. before booking a deluxe guided hunt. If you are a relatively successful hunter most of the time and in good shape a drop camp would be the way to go. There are very few quality guides that work in the eagle cap.If it were me I would do a drop camp, go in early so you can scout around and locate animals.

Yup talk to Barry of better yet Shay - they both guide in their and do drop camps - I had them lined up for a meat pick-up 2 years ago in case we needed them - we didn't but they do a fine job and know that country. And yes they do most of the behind the scenes stuff for Cameron when in the Minam.

I work for Barry, and have so for 5 years. I want to avoid using this site for advertising, so I will let the site do the talking. www.delsolwildernessadventures.com If you were to talk with barry, I would likely be your guide. Me, Shay Mann, Barry Cox, or John Wynans, but likely me and shay.

Something else. If anyone says they can guide you to a 350 bull or a 180 buck in the minam unit, they are lying. Totally full of #####. I know exactly the boundaries of moss springs area, and I can tell you beyond any shadow of a doubt that they don't have anyone working for them that can guide you to those kind of animals there. I'm not saying those quality of animals don't live there, because they do, but there damn sure ain't anyone who can guide you to them. Ive seen maybe 3 350 class bulls in there, and 5 or 6 180 mulies in my entire life. The times Ive had clients on these types of animals, I can count on one finger.

I know he was full of #####, the guy was an idiot. I would love to go on a hunt with del sol, they look like they put on a good time.

nice to see someone tell it like it really is oldoregon.....I have spent alot of time in there and in my opinion you nailed it.

People who hunt the caps, like myself, the Del Sol crew, Cameron Hanes, ect. do it not because of trophy quality. We hunt there because we rarely have to compete with other hunters, animal numbers are good, opportunities are good, the country is spectacular, and its a grand place for good times to be had. Don't hunt the caps if you are in it for a trophy, do it because you love the wilderness experience and all that it entails. Will you kill animals? Most likely. Will you kill a trophy? Most likely not!

Have hunted the Minum off and on for years. You had better be in shape and horses are highly recommended. Tough hunt in one of the most beautiful places on earth. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND MOSS SPRINGS OUTFITTERS. PERIOD! Just about anybody else. Other then that it will be an experience like no other. Enjoy and good luck.
